Murdock started out singing gospel music in her native Toledo. Singer/musician Roger Troutman hired Murdock as a backing singer for his family's band Zapp, who had several hits on Warner Bros. (or its Reprise Records imprint). Based on this success, Troutman began recording tracks with Murdock and lead singer Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players, among others, at his Dayton-based recording studio, Troutman Sound Labs. Murdock and Troutman's first chart single was a Warner single issued as Roger (featuring Shirley Murdock), "Girl, Cut It Out," which charted at number 79 R&B in early 1985.
Murdock was signed to Elektra Records with "No More," which made it to number 24 R&B in early 1986. Then came her signature hit, "As We Lay," written by Zapp's Larry Troutman and keyboardist Billy Beck (of the Ohio Players). The tender, melancholy ballad made it to the R&B Top Ten and peaked at number 23 pop in 1986. Her LP Shirley Murdock went gold, also helped along by the follow-up hits "Go on Without You" and "Be Free." She also released full-length albums in 1988 (A Woman's Point of View) and 1991 (Let There Be Love). In early 2000, Murdock toured in the inspirational/gospel play, Be Careful What You Pray For with Cuba Gooding and David Peaston.
Murdock released Home, her gospel music debut album, in 2002 on T.D. Jakes' Dexterity Sounds record label. She made her acting debut in the movie Sweating in The Spirit. Most recently, Murdock has signed with Tyscot Records and will release a new album in March 2007.[1]
We Need A Word From The Lord
Shirley Murdock Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We don't need another political uprising,
we don't need another conqueror on the scene.
What we need is a special word,
that will bond within our hearts
and give us direction from above.
[Chorus:]
a word from the Lord.
Just one word from the Lord,
will move all the doubts
and cause the sun to shine,
and give peace of mind;
speak Lord, speak.
[Verse 2:]
Lord we lack Thy wisdom and Thy understanding,
Lord we lack the very love You showed Your Son.
Lord we've altered in Thy ways
and we stand so much to gain,
so give us your word Lord, speak Lord.
[Chorus]
The lyrics to Shirley Murdock's song "We Need a Word from the Lord" speak to the inner conflicts and uncertainties that many individuals face. The first verse suggests that political and military leaders alone cannot solve the problems that plague society. Instead, there is a need for a special kind of guidance that can come only from above. By seeking this guidance, individuals can find direction and purpose in life.
The chorus emphasizes the importance of receiving this guidance from the Lord. One word from the Lord can dispel doubts and confusion and bring peace of mind. The second verse acknowledges that humans often lack the wisdom, understanding, and love that God embodies. By recognizing their shortcomings and seeking divine intervention, individuals can gain much-needed clarity and insight into their lives.
The lyrics of this song emphasize the importance of seeking guidance and clarity from a higher power. They also acknowledge the human tendency to fall short of divine standards and the need for humility and openness to receive guidance. This song can inspire listeners to seek spiritual guidance in their lives and find purpose and direction.
