Shocking Blue's by far biggest hit was Venus, which went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970. 'Venus' returned to the top of the U.S. charts in 1981 as part of the Stars on 45 Medley and was also successfully covered by artists such as Greece's Olympians (1970), Bananarama (1986), Japanese singer Yoko Nagayama (1986).
Nirvana covered the song Love Buzz for their debut album Bleach in 1989, and it was released as their first single. The British Group The Prodigy also sampled Love Buzz for their song 'Phoenix' on their 2004 album Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned.
Before 'Venus' the group had only had two minor Dutch hits in 1969: Long Lonesome Road and Send Me A Postcard. In 1970 two more hits followed: Mighty Joe and Never Marry A Railroad Man, the latter almost provoking a strike by workers on the London Underground when posters advertising the single in the Underground stations were put on display.
Shocking Blue had several more hits in The Netherlands and beyond. The group started to dissolve in 1973 when Van Leeuwen called it quits. Singer Mariska Veres left the group to start a solo-career in 1974 and Shocking Blue folded.
Mariska Veres died on December 2nd, 2006, after a short battle with cancer. She was just 59 years old.

Jail My Second Home
Shocking Blue Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Times are getting hard, so very hard.
Have no place to sleep
And absent bad, bad start.
Something's wrong worn,
Can I go and then jail my second home, yeah.
Can I get a job? I'm walking down the street.
Can I get a job? I'm walking down the street.
Because a man I
Jump on me and rest on me,
Put red and jail my second home, who.
Times are getting hard, so very hard apart.
Times are getting hard, so very hard.
Have no place to sleep
And absent bad, bad start.
Something's wrong
Going bad and jail my second home, yeah.
The lyrics of Shocking Blue's song Jail My Second Home talk about a person's struggle to find a place to sleep and get a job due to the difficult times they are experiencing. They are feeling the pressure of the desperation and frustration which can be observed through the repetition of the phrase "Times are getting hard, so very hard." This person is going through a bad start in life and feels like they have no place to go. They have no home and are struggling to survive. They are willing to go to jail as it seems like their second home where they can have a place to sleep and food to eat.
The lyrics further describe how the sun is setting, which alludes to the end of the day and the end of hope for them. At this point, they are mugged on the street, and hence, it can be inferred that they have no defense against the realities of life. It is a hopeless situation for them. They are talking to themselves, asking if they can go to jail and make it their second home.
The song is a poignant representation of the times people face when they are struggling to survive. It demonstrates how desperation can make people feel hopeless and helpless in situations where they need a glimmer of hope. The song is a reminder that a lot needs to be done to ensure that people have the necessary support when they go through such conditions.
