There is so much hullabulloo online and just out there concerning the gut and the microbiome. Your VDO is another succinct encapsulation of the essential facts needed to comprehend all this. I especially liked the data on the lower blood sugar due to high fiber whole grain diet and the hormonal effects. I'll pass on the fecal transplant though. I am always amazed how you can fit so much important data into such short VDOs. I've listened to pod casts that take an hour and don't cover as much as you do. Probably because those pod cast are 90% selling something and 10% data. Thanks again!

Quick intro to the microbiome with some of the most striking studies I've seen. This is an area I want to create a LOT more content on, both because it's an exploding research field with tons of exciting findings and because the number of people with gut health issues is increasing and there is rampant confusion!

The microbiome is the reason why some of us get sick why others stay perfectly healthy while eating almost the same foods. I think often it ultimately comes down to the effect of our microbiome on our immune system. For instance, butyrate is a powerful stimulator of Treg cells (one of my favorite microbiome sub-topics ;) )

Hi Doc - Another great summary of hard-to-digest (pun intended) science! I completely agree with the inclusion of fibrous vegetables and whole grains. However, I would like to add another important food group - legumes (beans, peas, lentils and chick peas) which are very high in soluble fiber. Can you please comment on them? Thanks.

Thanks for the video, Doc. I am a bit late to the party but I have a related question and some additional input as I had written a mini paper (for clinical neuropsy course, just 500 words, but still maybe my proudest paper ever) on the gut microbiome and neurodegenerstive disorders. There seems to be a case for dysbiosis and neurodegenerstive disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and multiple sclerosis to be associated. Probably nothing new, but I could share it.

For the question: What do you think about Kefir? Is it more probiotic compared to unsweetened yoghurt?

I recently watched a video and did some (not very comprehensive) research on salt. The video I watched suggested that the current recommendations for salt are too low (except if you already have high blood pressure), and suggested a higher salt intake may lead to less risk in developing high blood pressure. All of this is to say, that I'd love if you could do a video on salt and sodium! Excellent video as usual, thank you!

My current conclusion (also based on videos) is that we have tremendous ability to regulate salt in our system and that salt is a marker for unhealthy foods in our diet (cheese, chips, salty snacks, processed meats etc.). On a (whole) plant-based diet, most people are probably already consuming less salt anyhow.

Totally! We're mostly microbiome DNA, which is pretty cool to think about!

And the link to soluble fiber is so important! Short-chain fatty acids are becoming more commonplace in lab testing too!

And the links to high-fiber carbs and lowered risk of diabetes is something that needs to become more mainstream. The idea of "all carbs are bad" is crazy. It all comes down to the quality (and, coincidentally, fiber content).

Also, as an aside with the stool transplants. There are some studies with dogs that have crazy success rates with fecal transplants (like 90% success rates). Apparently this is pretty common in vet clinics, but for whatever reason has not been tried too often with humans yet...

Love whole grains, they taste better, not so sickly sweet but have a nice nutty flavor.👍
I do slightly low carb only because I want fiber. I‘m only reducing on refined carbs and add healthy fats instead. Kinda like Mediterranean. I hope it is still beneficial to my gut biome not going high carb.😊

You may want to look into natto as well. While the base product is also soybeans, just like miso and tempeh, It is much tastier. I consider it the Époisses of the soybean world and it is my personal favourite. There is, of course, also "stinky tofu" but since that is extremely high in salt (as miso is) it may not be the best choice, at least not for larger quantities.

they're very heterogeneous which is why I didn't really go into them too much. the amount of live bacteria present etc varies a ton. some do work well. I plan to do more videos on it

I read that the high-salt pickles are really bad for the stomach and can actually promote stomach cancer. It's a quandary. I used to make my own kefir and my gut was amazing. It was for me the hardest thing to cut out when I went plant-based 5 years ago.

@Adam Swift yes. 1 litre of coconut milk to one sachet of kefir grains. Sterilisation is the key. Sterilise everything you use. Leave on bench covered with cheese cloth for 48 hours. Then in fridge. When you get down to 1 cup, top back up to a litre and start again. You should get 4 to 5 top ups from the one sachet. I keep minimum of one cup in fridge and 1 cup to restart the next batch. Just remember to Sterilise everything

@Adam Swift I'm not sure about that. I've just found after about 5 litre the quality and fermentation drops off. Possibly due to other factors.
You could buy already bottled and fermented from most whole foods stores but if you want to experiment you can save some money.

Do you consider whole grain or whole wheat bread to be a good source of whole grain? Some of the whole wheat bread in the supermarket has a lot of stuff in it that I don't recognize. Dave's killer bread is popular among health conscious people,but even the ingredients in that don't look totally clean. I try to stick to Jack Lalanne's rule, "don't eat anything with more than one ingredient".

that's a good general rule. some people also make the distinction btw a whole grain (doesn't lack any natural ingredient and includes 100% whole wheat bread) and intact grains (in their natural form). What I do is I focus on intact grains as staples, then once in a while if I feel like it I have some bread (and I try to get the 100% whole form, but if I can't find it I'm not too worried since it's not a daily thing anyway)

The thing about whole grains is that they don't really have that much fiber - less than 10% of the carbohydrates. If you're trying to get > 40 grams of fiber per day, then legumes are a MUCH more efficient source, and take care of your protein needs to. Legumes are the true superfood.

This article describes in great detail how male drinkers have elevated estrogen levels. Does this apply to moderate drinkers? I don't know. And do not stop eating the nightshade vegetables! They are good for you! The idea they might be unhealthy is nonsense (my wife has osteoarthritis and is completely unaffected by them).

Yeah, I read that book. It's OK.

The author tells people to drink a BIG GLASS OF WATER WITH EVERY MEAL. Which is worst advice ever!
I cured my heartburn of 20 years by simply drinking NOTHING with meals. Waiting an hour after a meal and then drinking something.

He also is a coffee junkie and tells us coffee is "ok". WRONG!!! Coffee is highly addictive (which he admits) and literally exhausts our adrenal glands.

@Julot right, I suspect that's a function of the high amount of salt more than the fermented product per se? so making our own as suggested toward end of video, or avoiding the high salt varieties, or just having them once in a while (Greger mentions dosage = 1 tablespoon kimchii/day, probably realistic in Korea but 1000X more than average westerner?). good to bear in mind though! tks!

Yup, i dont think mycotoxins and nitrosamine have something to do with salt but with the fermentation process so yup moderation i'd say just like mushrooms especially raw mushrooms (agaritine).
