The prison guard was a genius he used the elephant 🐘 effect on him. The false hope was the chain. And the repeated capturing the rope. Showing him the freedom he can have, only to be captured over and over again. This broke his spirit, removing all notions any desire to facilitate an escape. It's the worst psychological torture you can inflict on the human spirit.
