Side A Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When you knew all along that you had to go
How could you you watch me sleep
So close to you
Pretending not to know
How could you memorize my name
How could you think
You're still the same
Believing i can
It's too late to stop pretending
It's too late for a new beginning
Later than the sunset
Later that the rain
Later than ever to love you again
How could you ask for more
With an innocent smile
Trusting me to stay
How could you close the door
And leave me here
Supposing I'm ok
How could you break down
My disguise
And uncover my fears
How could you look into my eyes
Ignoring my tears
It's too late to start pretending
It's too late for a new beginning
Later that the sunset
Later than the rain
Later than ever to love you again
[x2]
Its too late
The song Later by Side A is about a broken relationship where one person has to leave while the other stays behind. The song is a reflection of the emotions, doubts, and questions that arise after a breakup.
The first stanza talks about the confusion of one partner as to how the other could come with them when they already knew they had to leave. The second line speaks of intimacy and how the leaving partner could watch the other sleeping so closely but pretended not to know. The third line suggests that the partner who leaves memorized the other's name but has somehow forgotten who they are. The final line of this stanza casts doubt on the idea that the leaving partner still thinks they are the same as they were before and that the other partner still believes in them.
The next stanza talks about the trust the person left behind had in the leaving partner, who asked for more with an innocent smile. It talks about how the finality of the situation crashes down on the person left behind when the leaving partner closes the door and supposes they are okay. The next two lines retell how the leaving partner uncovered the person's fears, broke down their disguise, but ignored their tears.
The chorus repeats that it is too late to start pretending and too late for a new beginning.
Overall, the song Later is about the pain of not being able to let go of someone, of holding on to a love that has already faded. It is a poignant reflection of the emotions that arise after a breakup.
