Dying in Circles
Silent Planet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Beside the shadow of a frozen chapel, under the marriage of the cross and crown,
outside the privilege of the chosen ones, the Image of God is sleeping on the ground

Spires pierce the sky like steel through your hands,
Planks from our eyes plunged in your side
Water poured out but we want wine
You said, "take and remember", but we always forget
To the outcast sons, to the sojourners descendants of loss
I'll hold my breath until you can breathe
To truly live I must begin anew and be consumed
Make a heart of flesh from these hollow stones
I'm learning what it means to trade my certainty for awe

When you fell to your knees to wash my feet
Did you see the trampled shadows stained underneath?
Did you hear the acrimony, perpetuated by the puppet sewn to the pulpit?
We forgot your life and became a people of death
Spell-bound by the celibate spectacle, inhabiting mausoleums

We are the eulogy at the funeral of God
To the outcast sons, to the sojourners
Descendants of loss be consumed
I'll hold my breath
To truly live we must begin anew

Trade your certainty for awe

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Silent Planet's "Dying in Circles" are deeply reflective and poetic, exploring themes of religious oppression, misplaced faith, and the search for a meaningful connection with a higher power. In the first stanza, the singer describes an image of God sleeping on the ground, emphasizing the failure of organized religion and the dehumanization of individuals who are not part of the privileged inner circle.

The second stanza uses powerful imagery to critique the hypocrisy of the church, with "planks from our eyes plunged in your side" referencing the biblical story of Jesus after his crucifixion. The line "We forgot your life and became a people of death" further emphasizes this critique, suggesting that the focus on religious rules and rituals has led to a spiritual death rather than a life of spiritual purpose.

The final stanza offers a glimmer of hope, with the singer acknowledging that true faith requires a willingness to trade certainty for awe - to embrace mystery and the unknown rather than clinging to rigid dogma. The repeated phrase "To truly live we must begin anew" suggests a call to action for those who have been disillusioned by the church, urging a radical re-evaluation of what it means to be spiritual and find connection with a higher power.

One of the most beautiful songs Silent Planet has ever done.
It’s so tranquil but so heavy at the same time.

This band is just way to underrated. This album was a masterpiece, and they didn't have to just chug every song. They created such a solid piece of art. This album is something special. I wish they had a bigger fan base. If theirs any band that deserves the fame, it's Silent Planet.
