Silhouette
Simon Louis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Waking up early, I wish I wasn't early for this
Called your name in the evening, tell you how I feel like a mess
Parked out it in driveway and headed for the highway, I guess
But I'm burned down on the floor

You go to bed late, wished we didn't go through to today
You're hanging up early, never had it in you to stay
Driving through the side street, screaming at your dashboard display
But you're burned down on the floor

Tell me words I can't forget 'til I'm just a silhouette
Breaking down until all that's left
Is us dancing in my head

Staring at our picture, wonder if it's still on your wall
Leave the phone ringing, try to feel nothing at all
Looking for some space in a bathroom stall
But I'm trapped and sinking down

You're lost inside a memory, wonder if I'm doing the same
Sleeping in my sweater, you try and feel me again
Staring at the stars in the cold, night rain
But you're trapped and sinking down

Tell me words I can't forget 'til I'm just a silhouette

Breaking down until all that's left
Is us dancing in my head

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Simon Louis's "Silhouette" depict the aftermath of a failed relationship between two individuals. Both individuals are struggling to move on from the other, but find themselves constantly stuck in memories and past moments. The verses display the characters' attempt to distract themselves from their emotions. The singer wakes up early, trying to take control of their day, but they're overwhelmed by the thought of their lost love. They try to call the other person to tell them how they feel, but aren't able to. The chorus highlights the singer's desire for closure, wanting the other person to say something that will stick with them and help them move on.

The second verse describes what's happening with the other person. The singer wonders if the other person is experiencing the same feelings of nostalgia and confusion. The other person tries to distract themselves in the same way as the singer, by sleeping in their sweater and looking at the stars. However, they're both left feeling trapped and unable to move forward. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and heartache, as both individuals struggle to let go of their past relationship.
