To Love Somebody
Simone (Nina) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There' a light
A certain kind of light
It's never shown on me
I want my whole life to be
Lived with you
Lived with you

There's a way
Everybody say
Do each and every little thing
What good does it bring
If I ain't got you If I ain't got you
If I ain't got you If I ain't got you

You don't know
What it's like
Baby you don't know
What it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

In my brain
See your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind so blind

But I'm a woman
Can't you see what I am
I live and breathe for you
What good does it do
If I ain't got you If I ain't got you
If I ain't got you If I ain't got you

Say you don't know
What it's like
Baby you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

Oh'a, you don't know
What it's like
Baby you don't know
What it's like
To love somebody

To love somebody
The way I love you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Simone (Nina)'s song "To Love Somebody" express the deep longing and intensity of love. The opening lines set a tone of hope and desire, as the singer describes a light that has never shone on them before. They express a desire for their entire life to be lived with this person, emphasizing the importance and depth of their connection.

The song continues to explore the idea of love by highlighting the actions and sacrifices individuals are willing to make for their loved ones. The singer questions the purpose of doing anything if they don't have their beloved by their side, emphasizing the significance of their presence. The repetition of the line "If I ain't got you" underscores the importance of this person in the singer's life.

The chorus delves further into what it means to truly love somebody. The lyrics suggest that the person addressed in the song doesn't truly understand or comprehend the depth of the singer's love. They imply that the recipient of their affection has not experienced this kind of love before, as they sing, "Baby you don't know what it's like to love somebody, the way I love you."

The final verse adds another layer to the narrative, as the singer describes being blinded and consumed by their love, but also asserts their identity as a woman. This highlights the emotional intensity and personal investment the singer has in the relationship. They declare that they live and breathe for their beloved, asking what good it does if they don't have them.

Overall, "To Love Somebody" is a passionate and heartfelt plea for love and recognition, emphasizing the depth of the singer's feelings and the longing for reciprocation.

This is one of those tracks that I can listen to 6 times in a row without it getting stale. And I often have. There was a point in my life when this was crucial to getting through my day. The sound mix is great and the drumming is superb. I can't remember ever hearing better drumming on any recording that might be considered a rock track. Nina Simone comes from jazz, but I would put this in rock for lack of a better category.
I learned about this version from a story on This American Life on NPR. Someone had left his car out on the street for a long period while he was away. He came back to find that it had been broken into and apparently slept in- he assumed by a homeless person. The temporary resident left some odds and ends behind him when he left, and one of them was a mix tape. So the car's owner decided to play the mix tape- this was the first track I think. At any rate, it was played as the outgoing music for the story and I took notice. Soon it was downloaded and became part of my life. So thank you, anonymous homeless person. You changed my life.

Pure Soul my Sister !!! :))

The only problem is if you listen on 🎧 you only get the drum and horn in the left ear and the main and backing vocal on the right

De una belleza sublime. Simplemente celestial.
