If I Had Wings
Simple Minds Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's something about this sweet refrain
Reminds me that you're not there
And if I could care there's something about this curse
Like a needle inside a silken purse
Reminds me of all that you'd bring
If I had wings
I'm still standing
Blue mountain high
Only the fables get to fly
Without these words there's no reason why
It reminds me of all that you bring
If I had wings
Would like to teach myself
If I had wings
Would learn to stir myself
If I had wings
Strapped inside won't be denied
Nightmare brings
All that you said
And if I could fly
Long time saviour
That's the sinner's crime
Well without such trust
I know that I can never find
Never find, never find, never find
If I had wings
If I had wings
I'm still standing
Never find, never find, never find
Open inside something about this pain
There's something about this sweet refrain
Reminds me that you're not there
And if I could care there's something about this curse
Like a needle inside a silken purse
Reminds me of all that you'd bring
If I had wings
If I had wings
If I had wings
If I had wings
The lyrics of "If I Had Wings" by Simple Minds suggest that there is some kind of pain and longing that the singer is experiencing. He is looking back at memories and contemplating what it would be like if he had the ability to fly and leave his problems behind. This could be interpreted as a desire to escape a difficult situation, whether it be a relationship or some other challenge in life. The opening lines suggest that the pain is deep and possibly ongoing, but there is something sweet and beautiful about it that the singer cannot ignore. The mention of a cursed needle inside a silken purse is particularly potent, as it suggests something tempting and dangerous that cannot be escaped.
The lyrics also seem to underline the idea that life can be difficult and we need to learn how to help ourselves. The lines "Would like to teach myself / Would learn to stir myself / Strapped inside won't be denied" suggest that the singer is determined to find a way out of his predicament, even if it means going it alone. He acknowledges that he is trapped by his circumstances, but he refuses to be defeated by them. The repetition of the phrase "If I had wings" throughout the song is both a metaphor for the singer's desire for freedom and a reminder of what he does not have.
Overall, "If I Had Wings" is a song that grapples with some heavy themes, including pain, loss, and personal struggle. It's a reminder that life can be challenging, but that we must learn to face our problems head-on if we hope to overcome them.
