Whatever It Takes
Sinéad Lohan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

whatever it takes you to believe it
that's all right with me
take this morning in my kitchen
or whatever that helps you to believe
you will find me down by the river
getting high on my mortality
i'll be holding hands with nameless beauty
or whoever wants to stand next to me

all eyes on me
i'm going to the moon
time heals what you can't see
heads back
i'm leaving soon leaving soon

you can take it easy
'cause i've got a mind to
put your parachute on slow
we're moving into calmer waters
where all your loveliness will show
for all of your wanting me to react to
"look no hands on this carousel"
for me to be true to whatever you cling to
whenever your heart is going to tell

all eyes on me
i'm going to the moon
time heals what you can't see
heads back
i'm leaving soon leaving soon

whatever it takes you to believe it
that's all right with me
take this morning say it walks on water
whatever that helps you to believe
you will find me down by the river
getting high on my mortality
i'll be holding hands with my nameless beauty
or whoever wants to stand next to me

all eyes on me
i'm going to the moon
time heals what you can't see

heads back
i'm leaving soon leaving soon

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sinéad Lohan's Whatever it Takes talks about the singer's willingness to accept and go along with whatever helps the listener believe in themselves or the world around them. The lyrics suggest that the singer is open-minded and non-judgmental about what people need to believe in; whether it's such things as walking on water or holding hands with a nameless beauty by the river, it's all acceptable to the singer. The chorus, "All eyes on me, I'm going to the moon, time heals what you can't see, heads back, I'm leaving soon, leaving soon," seems to suggest that the singer is on a journey of self-discovery and growth. The line "time heals what you can't see" could mean that the singer believes that there is a lot of hurt and healing that needs to happen that may not be visible to the naked eye. However, in the end, there are places the singer wants to go and things to accomplish, but their departure seems inevitable.

The song seems to promote the idea of living and letting live, accepting things that we may not understand or agree with, but still being open-minded and non-judgmental. The line "getting high on my mortality" may mean that the singer is immersing themselves fully in life, including its inevitable end, and they want to make the most of it while they can. The fact that the singer is willing to hold hands with a nameless beauty or whoever wants to stand next to them suggests a kind of openness that is refreshing.

'No Mermaid' remains one of my perfect albums, not a weak track in the 12. This track instantly transports me to that summer. I was helping facilitate a peace walk with dozens of young people around the border of Northern Ireland. It was a very rough summer; the Drumcree riots in Belfast; the three dead Quinn boys; the Newtonhamilton bomb; the Omagh bomb; the Banbridge bomb... We ached and kept walking, and it's the nature of Northern Ireland to have great memories in the midst of chaos, laughs, tears, serious conversations, anger, frustration... But Sinéad beautifully haunted it all...
