Silent Night Holy Night
Sinead O'Connor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Silent night,
Holy night,
All is calm,
We see,
All is bright
Round young virgin mother and child,
Holy infant so tender and mild
We say
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night,
Holy night,
Shepherds first saw the sight
Glorious streaming from heaven afar,
Heav'nly host sing Alleluia
Christ the savior is born,
Christ the savior is born.
Silent night,
Holy night,
All is calm,
We see,
All in bright
Round young virgin mother and child,
Holy infant so tender and mild
We say

Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Overall Meaning

In Sinead O'Connor's rendition of the classic Christmas carol "Silent Night Holy Night," she beautifully conveys the peaceful and serene ambiance of the night on which Jesus Christ was born. The opening lyrics, "Silent night, Holy night, all is calm," sets the tone for the entire song, and the singer's gentle and soothing voice helps the listener to feel as if they are present in the stable where Jesus was born. The lyrics go on to describe the scene before them, highlighting the presence of a young virgin mother and her newborn child, the "holy infant so tender and mild".

As the song continues, we learn that the shepherds were the first to witness the events of that holy night and were mesmerized by the glorious spectacle of the heavenly host singing "Alleluia" while the Christ child was born. The concept of rebirth and hope is intertwined with the nativity story, marked by the birth of the savior. The final verse reiterates the same joyous and tranquil sentiments as the opening verse, wishing for the infant to sleep in heavenly peace.

Overall, the song describes the big moment of the birth of Jesus Christ as a tranquil and peaceful moment, which presents a stark contrast to the hectic and loud world outside of the stable. Sinead O'Connor's rendition stands as a testament to the simplicity and beauty of the story of Christmas.

Probably the best rendition I've heard!! No ridiculous vocal runs all over the place just pure great singing 👏

@KM-equality

One of the most beautiful renditions I've ever heard. Her voice is incredible.

What an absolute showstopper of a song by Miley. This has to be perhaps the very first pop version of "Silent Night" that I've ever heard and which is every bit as powerful as the original operatic version with Miley at the helm. Her voice is so strong and the emotions of soulfulness, serenity and reverence that she projects throughout the song while taking it to slightly more modern, contemporary heights in some of the notes and with her vocals are so raw and deep, all while still keeping it as rich and soaring with all divine heart as "Silent Night" always has been and should hopefully always continue to be way into the future. No new modern language slipped in, no nonsensical or opposing words that would jar with the tune or send out any opposing message to its intended one; no more than a spectacular homage to a classic in the hearts of people the world over by a woman of great talent and such a magnificent and tender, heartfelt female presence.

FUN FACT: this segment of the show was supposed to be for an anonymous artist but the person was a no show so Bill Murray asked Miley if she could perform another song for this segment. Bill asked her if she could sing Silent Night and she legit did not know of the song. Miley asked the team to give her an hour to learn the song, and she came back an hour later and brought the studio down with this amazing performance.

@nicktumminello9916

She actually performed this song wit her dad and somebody else when she was younger.. I think u made this up

@BobbyMooreable

@Nick Tumminello wrong! Bill Murray said it himself https://youtu.be/G1obLuMD2qI and she had never performed Silent Night before this. Do your research again.
