Vain
Singularity Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We’re not the way that we use to be
But what was funny is I have no complaints
I’m still a jerk
You’ve got that smirk like you know it all
It’s not that I’m too ordinary
Or maybe it is
I know my place in line
The least I can do is tell you it's all fine

I’m always late
You think I’m vain
And I know it but lets pretend I’m human
And so are you, your fancy shampoo
And you make too
It’s not that I’m sleep deprived
Or maybe it is
I can’t keep pressing snooze
I might not win but you’re the one I lose
I might not win but you’re the one I lose
I might not win but you’re the one I lose

We’re not the way that we use to be
But what was funny is we still play this game
I’m still at work
You try to flirt like you know it all
It's not that I’m too good for this
Or maybe it is
I know my place in line
The least I can do is tell you its all fine

I can’t relate
You think I’m cold
And I know it but lets pretend I’m human
And so are you, your fancy perfume
And you make too
It's not that I’m too indecisive
Or maybe it is
I can’t catch all your cues
I might not win but you’re the one I lose

I might not win but you’re the one I lose
I might not win but you’re the one I lose

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Singularity's song "Vain" seems to be a conversation between two people who have changed over time. They are no longer the same as they used to be, but the singer does not seem to mind. He mentions that he is still a jerk but does not seem too bothered by it. The other person has a smirk as if she knows everything. The lyric "It's not that I'm too ordinary, or maybe it is" suggests the singer is aware of his flaws and knows he is not perfect, and perhaps he is even ordinary. However, he accepts that he is who he is and is content with it. He acknowledges that he might not win in the game of life, but telling the other person that everything is fine seems to be the least he can do.

Moving onto the second verse, the tone shifts slightly. The singer mentions that he is always late, and the other person thinks he's vain. However, he wants to pretend that he's human and that she is too, despite her fancy shampoo. He seems to be saying that they should both have flaws despite society's expectations that they should present themselves perfectly. The lyric "I might not win, but you’re the one I lose" suggests that he may not win in the sense of achieving society's standards of success, but he is willing to accept that and is willing to lose as long as she does too, indicating an equal partnership. The final stanza is a repetition of the first, suggesting that the conversation they're having is a loop, and things haven't changed as much as they thought.
