Dear Prudence
Siouxsie and the Banshees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence won't you come out and play

Dear Prudence open up your eyes
Dear Prudence see the sunny skies
The wind is low the birds will sing
That you are part of everything
Dear Prudence won't you open up your eyes?

Look around round
Look around round round
Look around

Dear Prudence let me see you smile
Dear Prudence like a little child
The clouds will be a daisy chain

So let me see you smile again
Dear Prudence won't you let me see you smile?

Overall Meaning

The song "Dear Prudence" by Siouxsie and the Banshees is a cover of the Beatles' track from the 1968 White Album. The song is addressed to Prudence Farrow, the sister of actress Mia Farrow, who was a friend of the Beatles and attended their retreat in India in 1968, where she became very serious about her meditation practice.

The lyrics in "Dear Prudence" urge Farrow to come out of seclusion and explore the beauty around her: "Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?...Dear Prudence open up your eyes, the wind is low, the birds will sing." Siouxsie Sioux's voice captures the feeling of mystery and longing in the song, especially in the repeated refrain of "Look around, round, round, look around".

The song has been interpreted as an invitation to escape from the pressures of the world and embrace the simple joys of nature, and as a plea to overcome a depressive or introverted state of mind. The hypnotic rhythm and guitar riffs in the song, augmented by the use of sitar and tabla, evoke a dreamy and exotic atmosphere, fitting for the theme of discovering oneself through meditation.

I was in Venice when they were filming this... was woken up in the middle of the night to hear this outside my window... they were on the bridge right next to the building I was in... very cool thing to wake up to !!

@STUKASHOCK

+Lindsey Starr Lucky you, witnessing a moment in time. I love Souixsie.

@rockhero2274

The new generation has been introduced to bands like the Beatles and Journey. It's time for the Banshees dammit

@RobHeathers

If it helps... I heard "Peek-a-Boo" on Sirius satellite radio a week ago on channel 33 "1st Wave" and I've been devouring Siouxsie's work since then.

I keep believe I never knew who sang this before. I'd heard this song in the past, but I guess I chalked it up to someone else.

Go Siouxsie!!

Perhaps because it was originally done by the Beatles? Lennon wrote the song for Mia Farrow's sister Prudence. When they were all living in India in the late 60s, she was obsessed with meditating and he wrote the song as a way of convincing her to take it down a couple notches. :-)

@alonys

Siouxsie said once that she taught Robert Smith how to use a lipstick. They are both so sweet.

@stephm.3407

If that is true, they must have been smashed as his lipstick game has always needed a lot of work. ;)

@idfkwgo

Ik they're so adorable!

@dman3822

Wish Robert would have taught her to shave under her arms
