Curzon's power comes over very clearly in this performance. I remember listening to it many times when learning the sonata in 1967. A great performance of a great sonata, a work which is still not really understood and appreciated to this day. Many thanks for this upload.

One of the great recordings of the Brahms third—maybe even the greatest. And Curzon seems to be one of the few who understands "maestoso" in the opening of the first movement. The amazing tension and drama he achieves!

YES, James! This is an absolutely GREAT achievement in every regard. He really UNDERSTOOD the music, and played as though he MEANT every note. WONDERFUL PIANO SOUND as well. I'm amazed/ I heard him several times in New York, and was frankly disappointed, but THIS is absolutely SUPERB.

snaaptaker I also recommend Anatoly Vedernikov's recording, also from the 1960s

I totally agree, James. This has been, for about the past 50 years, one of my two all-time favorite recordings of the Sonata, along with Arrau's, also from the 60s.☺

The whole performance is exceptional, expressive, deeply felt, and with lovely tone from the pianist. The slow movements especially reveal his sensitive Horowitz-like tonal shadings and pedalling. There's also fire and passion but never that uglu metallic sound we hear so much of today. A different are much missed.

Its a strange and wonderful piece. I dont profess to understand it, but Curzon does and holds my attention. He is undervalued today. One of the greatest with such a varied repertoire. And if his Desert Island Disc episode is anything to go on, he was a delightful person.
