Sir Harry wrote this after the death of his only son, a Captain in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, killed in action in December 1916. His son John was then 25. What courage Sir Harry must have had, to have been able to put aside his own grief in composing these words and music which would become such strength and inspiration to countless others in their own struggles. God has truly blessed me through the words of this song.

I knew nothing of Harry Lauder until I found just this week that my grandmother, Margaret Baker/ Holliday lived in Cadzow row Hamilton in 1902 where she married at 14 a coalminer, like her father. I saw Harry lived there too, working the mines for 10 years and admire the spirit, resilience and humour that must have kept these folk going through hell. These homes often had no running water or sewerage system. He pleaded to help the miners, to no avail no doubt. Miners are still not given the respect they deserve. God bless him.

I was brought up listening to this,my dad was a great Sir Harry fan, my dad died suddenly in nov 2004 and this record was on his record player at the time so guess what we had playing as the last song at his funeral.... still makes me cry.... beautiful words and I know them off by heart

also would play Sir Harry Lauder, on the 78s. He was half Scotch, spoke Gaelic, etc. This song is so true, as hard as it is, one must continue on, rightly! Dad, had some funny stories, he remembered as a youth, one is of his mom's father, driving down on the Scotch side of the road, in contrary to, what was done in the US, Connecticut. He got away with it, as this was of long ago, 1920s or so, the roads narrow, no markings, and the cars were Model Ts' etc. He would get upset at the other driver and tell them to drive on the right side of the road.
Sorry for your loss, hope this story helps bring a smile back again.

This brings back memories to me, my mum used to sing it to us on the way home from a long walk, when my brother and I were 6& 7 respectively.😢& she lost all her family in the 1st world war,but she was always up beat,and so grateful she had a new family in us.😊

I heard Harry Lauder (I'm not sure he was "Sir") then at the Birkenhead Argyle and, although now in my nineties (just) and have correctly been diagnosed as "early Alzheimer's", I can sing every word - of the first verse at any rate. Although not a born Scot, I do have the right surname - and am a proud graduate of St Andrew's University.

He raised huge sums of money from the war effort which is why he was knighted. I just read that he was the first British artist to sell 1 million records. I posted about him in an Edinburgh group and no one had heard of him. He just has a road named after him, nothing more.

I believe this guy was Scotland's most successful vocalist/composer and at one time the most popular entertainer in the world. The song always reminds me of my four years as a child in Stromness Orkney. I watched a local theatre group perform this around about 1953. Amazingly I can still remember most of the lyrics. It was a remote place and most of the time local people entertained themselves and there was an impressive amount of natural talent around. My dad was a lighthouse keeper there and he played in a local dance band on guitar led by a guy called Jim Robertson.

I read his autobiography and it was great. As a teenager he had to go to work in coal mines but he would sing at local events for tips - and eventually singing became his world famous career.

I have a family history narrative written by my great uncle George Dougan that has a section about Sir Harry Lauder. My great grandfather John Dougan worded at the Mt. Baker Theater in Bellingham , Washington as the janitor. "He stayed on the job for 10 years and although it meant working from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven nights a week , he seemed to enjoy it . One night, two hold -up men hid in the theater after the last show and after the crowd left jumped Dad and tied him up, wrapping tape all over his face. Then they went up to the office, broke into the safe and made their get away. Dad was found all tied up in the morning when the manager arrived. The other even that he enjoyed more than the first involved meeting with the great Scottish entertainer Sir Harry Lauder. One night after the last show
Sir Harry was sitting in his dressing room, as Dad said , looking tired and forlorn. Dad said a few words in his scotch brogue and Sir Harry brightened up and invited him in. They sat there for several hours over a bottle of Scotch that Sir Harry produced, talking about the Old Country, as they had both grown up near Glasgow and had worked in the same coal mine at one time."

The story behind this song is a very sad and tragic one. Harry Lauder wrote this song for his only son, Captain John Lauder's death. Captain John Lauder tragically died on Thursday 28th December 1916 while he was fighting in World War 1.

I listened to this as a young child with my father who was from Strathtay Harry was a great spirit who brought so much hope and happiness to so many. I ignore some detractors from the generous spirit, anyone can do that, the world is full of them. The world goes on by the determination to bring goodness and mutual kindness to fellow humans. I have seen one source which suggests that the road to which people should 'keep on to the end' was inspired by the straight Roman road from Albert to Bapaume on the Somme, up which the British and Imperial troops fought from Lochnagar Crater to the Warlencourt Knoll for four long and bloody months from 1 July to 5 November 1916. Sir Harry's son was of course killed on the Somme

It's many years since I first heard this beautiful song which must be one of the greatest sources of encouragement ever to come out of Scotland. It shows the courage of Sir Harry Lauder to pen "The End of the Road" after losing his only son in the First World War. Back in 1985, I heard an old recording on Robbie Shepherd's "Reel Blend", one Sunday morning, of Sir Harry singing that beautiful old Sacred Song, "Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep. So moving. Always reminds me of tramping the North Coast of Scotland, John o'Groats to Ullapool 1980. The way was long but this song, and many others, kept our hearts strong. Now I'm tramping a very different road, a long steep hill of lockdown-induced depression, but I'm determined to keep going and fight on through. I'm actually from Essex but like John McLeod, I too have a home in St Andrews.

I first heard of this song in a Little House on the Prairie prequel book I had when I was 8 or 9 (I think it was On Tide Mill Lane, but I'm not sure). Almost 20 years later I've finally found out the tune! I must say, even though I like this version, I kind of prefer the version that my younger self came up with in my head. :P

I am reminded of this song for a Capt , now Col. Tom. My Gt. Uncle also served in Burma with the Scots Guards. He was a Bandsman and also an Active soldier. He was captured and then imprisoned by the Japanese . But survived. He got the Nickname "Toey Foreman" Even had a cartoon drawing of him whilst incarcerated. He would often sing this and "Boots boots boots boots marching up and down again , there's no discharge in the morn " and "Trumpeter ! Who are you calling for "? among his many ditties.
