The band members bonded over a shared love of NZ music and a passion for making their own and formed after meeting at a Kora concert in 2006. Three members flatted together as Otago University students, spending countless hours in their "recording studio" (Eli Paewai's room) at 660 Castle St; hence the band name.
Six60's debut EP, released in 2008, features a track called "Someone to Be Around" that was left off their debut album but continues to be one of their most popular songs.
The band's self-titled debut album was released on 10 October 2011 on their own label Massive Entertainment. The album was produced and mixed by Tiki Taane and debuted at number one in the New Zealand charts and was certified gold within its first week of release. Their first two singles "Rise Up 2.0" and "Don't Forget Your Roots" reached number one and number two respectively on the RIANZ singles chart and were both certified double and triple platinum.
In 2018 the band won five Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards and were the most streamed artist by New Zealanders on Spotify. On 23 February 2019, Six60 became the first New Zealand band to play a sold-out concert at the Western Springs Stadium, to a crowd of 50,000 fans. On 24 April 2021, Six60 played the first concert at Auckland's Eden Park Stadium, to a crowd of 50,000 fans. It was the closing of the Six60 Saturdays country-wide tour and the largest concert of 2021.

I'm living life with no stop sign
I'm up all night, forget it
You got me once, not this time
Got new kicks on, just do it
I'm running after the world
I'm breaking out of these chains
I don't get it, but I'm in it
'Cause when the ship rides out you gon' witness
That there will be nothing else there but you
So I'ma go live each day
With an empty cup and a glass half full, oh
Oh I, oh I, oh I (I gotta) exhale
Oh I, oh I, oh I (I gotta) exhale
This not a love song, forget it
I've been around enough to know that your made from plastic
These moments show only your real friends get it
I know it's nothing but a painted red rose, but I get it
You're finished
'Cause when the ship rides out you gon' witness
That there will be nothing else there but you
So I'ma go live each day
With an empty cup and a glass half full, oh
Oh I, oh I, oh I (We gotta) exhale
Oh I, oh I, oh I (We gotta) exhale
Breath in, breath out, exhale
Breath in, breath out, exhale
'Cause when the ship rides out you gon' witness
That there will be nothing else there but you
So I'ma go live each day
With an empty cup and a glass half full, oh
Oh I, oh I, oh I (We gotta) exhale
Oh I, oh I, oh I (We gotta) exhale
Oh I, oh I, oh I (We gotta) exhale
Oh I, oh I, oh I (We gotta) exhale
The song "Exhale" by Six60 is about living life to the fullest and not letting anyone bring you down. The singer talks about not understanding why some people try to hold him back, but he's determined to break free from those chains and live his life without any limitations. He's ready to chase after his dreams and leave no room for regrets.
The chorus of the song talks about the importance of taking everything in stride and living life with a positive attitude. The line "With an empty cup and a glass half full" is a metaphor for approaching life with an open mind, willing to embrace everything that comes your way while also maintaining a sense of optimism.
The second verse deepens the theme of the song by emphasizing the singer's desire for authenticity and true friendship. He recognizes that there are people in his life who are "made from plastic" and only real friends would understand the moments that truly matter.
Overall, "Exhale" is an anthem for living life to the fullest with a positive and open attitude, free from negativity and limitations.
