The band members bonded over a shared love of NZ music and a passion for making their own and formed after meeting at a Kora concert in 2006. Three members flatted together as Otago University students, spending countless hours in their "recording studio" (Eli Paewai's room) at 660 Castle St; hence the band name.
Six60's debut EP, released in 2008, features a track called "Someone to Be Around" that was left off their debut album but continues to be one of their most popular songs.
The band's self-titled debut album was released on 10 October 2011 on their own label Massive Entertainment. The album was produced and mixed by Tiki Taane and debuted at number one in the New Zealand charts and was certified gold within its first week of release. Their first two singles "Rise Up 2.0" and "Don't Forget Your Roots" reached number one and number two respectively on the RIANZ singles chart and were both certified double and triple platinum.
In 2018 the band won five Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards and were the most streamed artist by New Zealanders on Spotify. On 23 February 2019, Six60 became the first New Zealand band to play a sold-out concert at the Western Springs Stadium, to a crowd of 50,000 fans. On 24 April 2021, Six60 played the first concert at Auckland's Eden Park Stadium, to a crowd of 50,000 fans. It was the closing of the Six60 Saturdays country-wide tour and the largest concert of 2021.
Hang On

Saying don't you go and fly too high
But everybody needs a bully to fight
To teach you how to stand up right
Put my trust in the way I'm feeling
Don't say nothing unless you truly mean it
Right now no one's on your side
But if you give it a little time
They'll be saying you were right, yeah
I don't mind if you don't believe me
Nothing worth doing is easy
I know it's hard to keep on keeping
When they tell you you're just dreaming
Put my trust in the way I'm feeling
Don't say nothing unless you truly mean it
And hang on to your pride
Right now no one's on your side
But if you give it a little time
They'll be saying you were right
Hang on to your pride
Right now no one's on your side
But if you give it a little time
They'll be saying you were right
Hang on to your pride
They'll be saying you were right
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Six60's song Hang On is an uplifting anthem meant to inspire perseverance and self-belief. The first lines of the song, "They're lighting fires to dim your light, Saying don't you go and fly too high," are a powerful metaphor for the negative influences and naysayers that people often encounter when they pursue their dreams. The singer encourages the listener to not allow the bullies to extinguish their light or deter them from reaching for the sky. Instead, one should embrace the struggle and use it as a tool to learn how to stand up right.
The chorus of the song, "Hang on to your pride, Right now no one's on your side, But if you give it a little time, They'll be saying you were right," further emphasizes the importance of holding on to one's pride and values even when no one else seems to be supporting them. The phrase "Hang on" itself is an important theme throughout the song, touching on the idea of resilience and tenacity in the face of adversity. The lyrics repeatedly encourage the listener to trust in their feelings, speak their truth and believe in themselves, no matter how difficult that may be.
In summary, Six60's song Hang On serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance and self-belief amidst adversity, emphasizing the importance of holding on to one's values and fighting for what one believes in.
