Voices
Skiba Matt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On the ceiling there’s a feeling and its spreading like ink
That is slowly spilling out from the well
And all the guilt that you felt smiling down from above
With a pit inside you deeper than hell
And it’s a crime all the time you spent blaming yourself
All is fine in the shrine of mystery and doubt
And I tried, I tried, I tried to explain they’re in vain but it’s no fucking help
All alone with the voices in your head
Skin and bones hell knows all the poison that you’ve been fed
All alone with the voices in your head
In the dark as you walk hand in hand with the living dead
The living dead

On the floor by the door there’s a sliver of light
And a pair of cloven feet standing there
And there’s a knock as the clock strikes 3:33, as you awaken to a living nightmare
And it’s a shame that you blame your bad luck on a girl
You destroy and rejoice as you fuck up the world and
I scream, I scream, I scream and I dream of the day that you’re finally gone

All alone with the voices in your head
Skin and bones hell knows all the poison that you’ve been fed
All alone with the voices in your head
In the dark as you walk hand in hand with the living dead
The living dead

I escaped to a place called Babylon
Through the gates face to face with the seven headed one
I escaped to a place called Babylon
Never to return I’m here to burn eternally home sweet home

All alone with the voices in your head
Skin and bones hell knows all the poison that you’ve been fed
All alone with the voices in your head
In the dark as you walk hand in hand with the living dead

All alone with the voices in your head
Skin and bones hell knows all the poison that you’ve been fed

All alone with the voices in your head
In the dark as you walk hand in hand with the living dead

Overall Meaning

In Skiba Matt's song "Voices," the lyrics paint a picture of a person struggling to deal with their own thoughts and fears. The opening lines set the tone, describing a feeling spreading across the ceiling like ink, reflecting the darkness growing within the singer. They are burdened by guilt and self-blame that seems to be emanating from above them, leaving them feeling like they are in a pit of despair. They try to explain their feelings to others but find it no help, trapped and alone with the voices in their head.

As the song progresses, the singer's dark thoughts become even more vivid, with references to cloven feet, a knock at the door, and a living nightmare. They blame others for their bad luck and take pleasure in recklessly causing destruction, only adding to their personal torment. The chorus repeats, emphasizing how alone they feel even as they walk hand in hand with the living dead.

In the final verse, the singer declares that they have given up on trying to escape their thoughts and instead embraced their inner darkness. They have escaped to a place called Babylon, where they are face to face with the seven-headed one, suggesting they have made a deal with the devil. The singer has accepted that they may never return and are content to burn eternally in this dark place they call home.

Overall, "Voices" is a haunting depiction of a person living with their inner demons, feeling hopeless and alone in the face of a growing darkness.

Matt Skiba is absolutely incredible at writing melodies. Listened to this album for the first time a few days ago and I was in awe at just how perfect some of the melodies are on even the more forgettable songs. He's amazing.

I love love love this song. I had this in my head all day when I started listening to the cd more. It's ironic not seeing Skiba in the video but it went with the song and it was amusing.
