Scapegoat
Skinlab Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They try to break me down
I'm tired of wearing the sorrow crown
Try to escape to myself
Try to relate to you

You try to break me down
You try to break me down
Try to relate to you
I'm not your fucking scapegoat

Say what you want
Scapegoat!
I'm not your fucking scapegoat!

Don't let them break you down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Skinlab's song "Scapegoat" discuss the theme of being targeted and subsequently, the feeling of being used. The first verse starts with the singer of the song expressing their exhaustion of wearing a crown of sorrow. They seem to be longing for a way out, to find themselves and be understood, possibly by the person they are referring to in the second verse, who is trying to break them down. The repetition of the phrase "Try to relate to you" suggests that there is a breaking point happening in the connection between the two people.

The chorus is a declaration of defiance that the singer is not going to be someone's scapegoat anymore. They are not going to take the blame for someone else's mistakes, nor are they going to allow themselves to be used as a tool for someone else's emotional release. The use of "fucking" in the lyrics, while vulgar, adds to the intensity of the declaration. The last line of the chorus "Say what you want Scapegoat!" is a direct message to the person trying to break them down, telling them that they will no longer be silent, and they will stand up for themselves.

Overall, "Scapegoat" is a song about empowerment and standing up for oneself. It's about recognizing your worth and refusing to be used by others. The lyrics, combined with Skinlab's heavy metal sound, create a powerful anthem for those who feel they have been pushed to the brink.

The best live show I've ever seen was SkinLab touring with Pissing Razors and S.o.D., the year the album this song is from dropped. Even though I really love Pissing Razors, SkinLab's set was fucking beastly. I'll never forget hanging out with them on their bus. Greatest moment of my teenaged life.

lab & razors were the two most vicious groove metal bands in history, none can top them they hold the champ title till the end of the world.
...Listening to skinlab was like listening to a movie (i don't mean soundtrack) they were unique in sound and steev had a killer voice and their drummer was heavily skilled, the guitars were tuned lower than any metal band during their time and genre (besides crowbar). As for pissing razors they honorably deserve to be called pantera 2 and some others, but they were interestingly a heavier version with a creative alternative; got a bit boring later on, nevertheless; Much respect to both of these underrated metal heroes and legends.
