Summer
Skinshape Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I said take me back to those golden days of the summer
Over there behind those distant hills I remember
In the evening light we played outside in the wheat fields
As the sun went down we swam in the sea by the moonlight

I said take me back to those golden days of the summer
In the distant hills of the south land downs I remember yeah
In the evening light we magnify in the garden
As the sun went down we swam in the sea by the moonlight

Overall Meaning

Skinshape's song "Summer" is a nostalgic and wistful ode to the carefree days of summers past. The songwriter is longing to return to a time and place where life was simple and idyllic. The lyrics evoke a sense of longing and melancholy, as well as a sense of joy and freedom.

The first few lines refer to the distant hills that the songwriter remembers from their youth. They recall playing outside in the wheat fields in the evening light, and swimming in the sea by the moonlight. The repetition of the phrase "take me back to those golden days of the summer" reinforces the sense of longing for a simpler time.

The second verse continues along the same themes, with a reference to the "south land downs" and magnifying in the garden. The imagery suggests a rural setting and a connection to nature. The final line of the song "we swam in the sea by the moonlight" brings the listener back to the feeling of freedom and joy that the songwriter feels when reminiscing about summer.

This takes me back to this summer, to a brief moment when my country lifted up all the covid restrictions and we were doing pretty good (spoiler alert, right now we are not so much) – I was in my favorite bar with a friend, and just as we were leaving, totally wasted, I heard this song on the radio... I've never heard it before but it spoke to me so much, and I stood next to the speaker, I told my friend "hold on, I gotta remember these lyrics, I don't want to forget this song" and I stood there, remembered the chorus, I battled every alcohol cell in my body as I was telling them "please don't let me forget this you idiot" and I jotted it into my phone a couple minutes later that was at like 2% battery... I totally forgot about it for two days and then I saw the notes, and managed to find the song again. I listened to it non stop for like a week and then Spotify reminded me of it, among my other most listened songs. It's such a good vibes song, I need to play this whenever I feel down... Here's to hoping for a better 2021!
