As a child, Grey performed professionally with her mother in a folk duo called Generations. In 2003, Grey moved to Los Angeles and recorded a demo under the alias Holly Brook, which would be her stage name for several years. In 2004 she signed a publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group and a recording contract with American rock band Linkin Park’s Warner Bros. Records’ label imprint, Machine Shop Recordings. She would later release her debut album, Like Blood Like Honey, under the labels in 2006.
In 2010, after moving to Oregon, she co-wrote Eminem and Rihanna's No.1 hit single "Love the Way You Lie" alongside British record producer Alex da Kid, who subsequently signed her to his label imprint, KIDinaKORNER. Her work with Eminem on Love the Way You Lie was the first of many collaborations between the two.
Grey's second album and first under the pseudonym Skylar Grey, Don't Look Down, was released in July 2013. Her third album, Natural Causes, was released in September 2016. In 2019, Grey announced that she had left Interscope Records, and released an EP, Angel With Tattoos, in October of the same year. She released her fourth album, the eponymous Skylar Grey, in April of 2022. In 2023, she announced her intention to re-record her hit songs after selling her music catalogue two years prior to be able to afford to settle a divorce suit.
Grey is perhaps best known as a guest vocalist on several hit singles, including Fort Minor's "Where'd You Go", P. Diddy's "Coming Home", Dr. Dre's "I Need a Doctor", Macklemore's "Glorious", and more. She has also written for number of other prominent artists, including but not limited to Kehlani, Pink, Nicki Minaj, Céline Dion, and Beyoncé. Her music has featured in multiple films, including Suicide Squad, The Fate of the Furious, Aquaman, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Over her career Grey has accumulated five Grammy nominations, including nominations in the categories of Song of the Year and Album of the Year.

The future seemed so bright
Then this thing turned out so evil
I don't know why I'm still surprised
Even angels have their wicked schemes
And you take that to new extremes
But you'll always be my hero
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
Well that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
Well that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
Now there's gravel in our voices
Glasses shattered from the fight
In this tug of war you always win
Even when I'm right
'Cause you feel me fables from your head
With violent words and empty threats
And it's sick that all these battles
Are what keeps me satisfied
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
Well that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
Well that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
So maybe I'm a masochist
I try to run but I don't wanna ever leave
Till the walls are going up
In smoke with all our memories
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
Well that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
Well that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
Skylar Grey's song "Love The Way You Lie" is a powerful and emotional ballad that speaks to the complicated nature of relationships. The song begins with the singer looking back at the beginning of her relationship, where things seemed bright and full of promise. However, over time, things have turned dark and even evil. Despite this, the singer is still surprised by the way their love has turned out.
The song then addresses the idea that even angels can have wicked schemes, and the person the singer is speaking to takes those schemes to new extremes. Despite this, the person will always be the singer's hero, even though they have lost their mind. The chorus then comes in with the powerful line, "Just gonna stand there and watch me burn, well, that's alright because I like the way it hurts." This line speaks to the idea that the singer is willing to endure pain and suffering because they love the person they are with so much.
As the song progresses, the lyrics become more intense, with gravel in their voices and broken glasses from fights. The dynamic between the two people is one of a constant tug of war, with the other person always winning, even when the singer is in the right. The violent words and empty threats are sickening, but the battles are what keep the singer satisfied. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the theme of the singer loving the person even though they cause them pain.
The song ends with the singer acknowledging that they might be a masochist, but they can't bring themselves to leave the person they love. They will continue to stand there and watch themselves burn for the sake of their love. The final chorus repeats, driving home the intense and complicated nature of the relationship.
