The Final Battle
Skymning Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A time when darkness becomes all
When daylight is forgotten forever, ever

Into the ruins I walk
The snow is blood filled from battles before

He stares into my eyes
He knows we are the last ones left
The battle must go on
Until one of us dies

The last battle has begun
The knight draws his sword and comes close, attacks
Icy winds blow strong
By the ruins I fight my final battle

He stared into my eyes
He knows we are the last ones left
The battle must go on
Until one of us dies

He stares into my eyes
My sword falls into the snow
His blade is covered with my blood
As he pulls it out of my body

I fall down on my knees
My life is slipping away

The knight turns around
Walking away from the final battle

Overall Meaning

The song “The Final Battle” by Skymning tells the story of the end of a long and brutal war. The first two lines of the song describe the bleak and hopeless situation that the characters find themselves in. Darkness has become all-consuming and there seems to be no hope for any kind of future. The setting is a war-torn land where battles have been fought in the past and the snowy ground is stained red with blood.

The singer of the story is engaged in a final duel with an opponent referred to as “the knight”. It's not clear whether the singer or the knight is the hero or the villain, but they are the last two combatants standing. The lines “He stares into my eyes, He knows we are the last ones left” suggest that the two are intimately connected and they are both acutely aware of the gravity of the situation. The battle must go on until one of them dies, there can be no other resolution.

As the song progresses, we see that the singer is eventually defeated. The lines “My sword falls into the snow, His blade is covered with my blood” highlight the finality of the situation. The singer realizes that he is dying and falls to his knees. The knight walks away from the battle as the singer's life slips away. It's a poignant ending to a powerful and grim story.
