Cursed
Slaves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Too sick and tired
Don't wanna wait a year
I fake a smile
Inside a broken mirror
You count the reasons why we'll never make it far from here
I'm gonna try to disappear
And when it rains down
You keep your hands out
I know you're wishing that one of your plans would pan out
Somebody told me
It's not in my control
I get the message but I still might take it personal

Our lucky stars are falling down so hard it hurts
I'm sick of being lost
And keeping fingers crossed

Lately I'm getting the feeling
Nothing works
Caused we're cursed
And she says so am I
I didn't wanna believe it
Each step forward
Puts us ten behind

Im waiting on a sign
Like it or not
We're running out of time
We look for signals but they burn up in the atmosphere
Close enough to make it clear

Our lucky stars are falling down so hard it hurts
I'm sick of being lost
And keeping fingers crossed

Lately I'm getting the feeling
Nothing works
Caused we're cursed
And she says so am I
I didn't wanna believe it
Each step forward
Puts us ten behind

Will we break or we bend
Just to lose it in the end
We're too old to play pretend
Should I go or should I stay
Will we ever be okay
Or am I just getting in your way

Lately I'm getting the feeling
Nothing works
Caused we're cursed
And she says so am I
I didn't wanna believe it

Each step forward
Puts us ten behind

Overall Meaning

In the song "Cursed" by Slaves, the lyrics convey a sense of frustration, exhaustion, and pessimism in a relationship. The singer is sick and tired and doesn't want to wait anymore. They put on a fake smile, but behind a broken mirror, they feel trapped and unable to escape. The singer recognizes that the reasons for their lack of progress and inability to move forward are numerous and feel hopeless. They contemplate disappearing as a way to cope with their struggles.

The chorus emphasizes the overwhelming feeling of bad luck and misfortune in the relationship. The "lucky stars" that are supposed to bring good fortune are falling hard, causing pain and despair. The singer is tired of feeling lost and constantly hoping for better outcomes but always being disappointed. The repetition of "keeping fingers crossed" portrays the futile and desperate attempts to hold onto hope.

As the song progresses, the singer becomes more aware that nothing seems to work in the relationship. They feel cursed, as if everything that can go wrong does, and their partner affirms feeling the same. The idea of being cursed suggests that the problems they face are beyond their control and are happening regardless of their efforts. Each step forward only seems to result in setbacks, perpetuating a cycle of stagnation and frustration.

The bridge of the song poses questions about the future of the relationship. The singer wonders if they will break or bend under the pressure or if their efforts will ultimately be in vain. They acknowledge that they are too old to pretend and question whether they should stay or go, fearing that they might be hindering their partner's progress.

In the final repetition of the chorus, the singer's feeling of nothing working and being cursed intensifies. They express a reluctance to believe in the reality of their situation and the setbacks they face. Each step forward only seems to put them further behind, suggesting a sense of hopelessness and resignation.

Crazy to think he was only given a few hours notice and opportunity to join before the band went overseas since Jonny wasn't at the airport due to a relapse. Dude had to make a split second decision and now the band is thriving more than ever. Love to see it.
