Girl Fight
Slaves Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Screams rang out into the night.
Girl fight! Girl fight!
Make me lose my appetite.
Girl fight! Girl fight!
Girl fight! Girl fight!
I'm not gonna get too close,
My shoes are new,
The song "Girl Fight" by Slaves portrays a typical high school brawl between two girls that draws attention and encouragement from onlookers while simultaneously making others uncomfortable. The chorus "Girl fight! Girl fight!" is used as a means of taunting and instigating the fight. The first line of the chorus "Screams rang out into the night" describes the chaotic and frenzied energy of the scene as people cheer and jeer. The second line "Make me lose my appetite" hints at the underlying cruelty of the situation, as some people are not entertained by the spectacle and are instead repulsed by the violence.
The final lines of the chorus "I'm not gonna get too close, my shoes are new, my shirt is white" inject a tone of aloofness and privilege into the song. The singer is an observer who is not directly involved in the fight and is more concerned with protecting their appearance than with intervening to stop the violence. This suggests a commentary on the social dynamics surrounding fights and how people's reactions often have more to do with status than with genuine concern for others.
Overall, "Girl Fight" highlights the destructive nature of violence and how it is often used by some to exert power over others while causing harm and trauma.
