Love the videos and this on especially. Retired US Marine. Most people know about us and our Navy Seals and Delta Force.
In case they didn’t tell you… those mats you slept on is a comfort item. We had them too but we rarely got to use them so we just slept on the ground or dug a hole and had to sleep in a hole while another person stayed up in the same hole. I personally slept on rocks, sand, dirt, mud, concrete, and wood just to name a few.

You looked like you enjoyed the experience and I am glad you got to do it. I know I would love to be able to do that so thanks for taking us with you!

@jafinch78 I never slept outside during snow, but did it during heavy rain. No tent or sack, dug a hole in the ground and covered up with my jacket . I was happy to sleep for 4 hours. Thank you for your service, been there done that, got the T-shirt.

The mats are a god send on snow and ice. I never thought before sleeping on top of in a bivy sack or tent until I owned one. I always had dug down to the ground directly. They're nice and in all other conditions are a luxury or really help with fatigue recovery. Thank you for your service.

The part where you asked the women about females in the military was very interesting. Many of them said it's a role of a man, but I bet many of them had grandmothers who fought the Nazis, the Soviet Union was the only Allied country that allowed women into combat, in roles such as snipers, pilots and operating anti aircraft guns.

@ceu160193 of course. however special forces requirements are hard for ANY person to meet. 99% of men could not meet them either, so i feel it’s unnecessary to specify gender as the woman who would want to join most likely does not conform to the average gender role in terms of body composition/muscle.

As an American soldier, I have to say that the similarities in the training are quite striking. Even the ration is very similar in it's contents. You did a great job keeping up, much respect. I have nothing but respect for the Russian military and consider them to be amongst the most professional soldiers in the world. I would enjoy nothing more than to sit down with a Russian soldier and share stories of military experience, I'm sure there would be a lot of commonalities.

Very well done Eli ! This was just the tip of the iceberg for military training, uncomfortable, grueling and strenuous. You handled it very well indeed. I would not like to see women in this particular military role but if the situation demands it then yes, they can do a great deal. The Russian women in service to the Motherland during the Great Patriotic War were amazing and very courageous. Thank you for this great experience with you today !👍👍👍👍

Excellent video Eli, well done for having the balls to do it! My view of women in the military is that they should be certainly part of it, but not fighting upon the frontlines of conflicts. Your channel is starting to become essential viewing for me. Please could you do a good Christmas special for us lonely British males out here? This looked tougher than my field training in the German Army. Luckily for me it was the middle of summer, very warm and dry. During the night watch I was wearing a helmet and could rest my head on the scope of my gun. I immediately fell asleep and slept through my one hour shift 😂

Cool video Eli! Did you guys get to do live fire shooting? Or just drills/manuevers, all this is very familiar to me being a military child!

For the United States, yes we have MANY special forces of the 4 main military branches, some are well known like Navy Seals (Navy), Delta Force (Army) & Green Berets, but there are actually a lot more in US military that would be labeled "special forces" (75th Ranger Regiment, Marine Marauders (Force Recon), even Air Force has a couple)

For United States it was long held that women should not be allowed in combat units, but this is slowly changing, there is currently some women who have passed special forces training 😉

My humble opinion...is that whether your a guy or girl....it takes a special breed of person to be in the military/combat positions/ and especially special forces....it requires a "warrior" ethos...and this simply is not in every human being, something you are born with

Salute for participating young lady. Just a very small taste of what it could be like. Keep in mind actual service in the armed forces lasts for years and you can not quit because you are cold, wet, hot, tiered, hungry, or even sick. Training never ends. Nice video.

This is beyond cool!!! Spetsnaz is one of the best special forces in the world. You were very fortunate to have such an experience! In the the back of my mind, have wanted to make a suggestion on covering the topic of them. However, I thought the notion of it was out of the question. That was a tremendous opportunity you were able to participate in. Were any live fire drills conducted with the AK's?

@Yasty Man right on. There are a whole lot of different "Spetsnaz" units in both in the Armed forces of Russia, in different law enforcement agencies and even other agencies. When on operations they dont have any uniform or other Insignia that say " Hey we are Spetsnaz" (Besides the police/SWAT)

Actually, Russian women in the military is nothing new (they fought on the battle field in WW2 and it was a huge shock to the Nazis at the time). I love watching these types of videos. That was a trip down memory lane, lol. Very similar to the basic training I had in the British Army, we had a sheet and a couple of bungee cords, you had to hang it between trees. However, when we did it, it was pouring with rain and I was on an OP for hours lying on wet grass, I nearly froze to death. Also, we had to use blanks and carry heavy weapons, not just individual weapons. And the food you've got there is far better than anything we had. The other difference is that we had fake buildings made from concrete blocks we had to assault at night, set up L-shape ambushes etc. Very odd to hear the comments from the women. We had a lot of women in our regiment. It's ridiculous to say men are physically more able to do it, because most men can't do it either. Women have certain advantages over men, they have a lower centre of gravity so they can shoot from the standing position more easily and also it's easier for them to stand for long periods. One of the reasons the Soviet Union won the war is because they used women in combat roles so they had an advantage over the Germans.

It's not about being a special forces soldier but common sense. If you go to shooting range it's the first thing you been teach by instructor: every gun it's hypothetically loaded. So don't do dumb things and act smart.

Very interesting video. As for my experience I enlisted in the United States Army in 1981. My training began in March at Fort Jackson South Carolina. I qualified expert with the M16 and so I was able to ride in a helicopter to the bivouac area. We had to set up two man tents that we were to sleep in for the 3 nights we were there. We had to pull guard Duty on the dirt road for 2 hour shifts and on the second night somebody came to the bivouac area to my tent and got me so I had to stand on the road and pull guard Duty for 2 hours at 2 in the morning. The male trainees were not permitted to take a jacket to bivouac so all we wore were our uniforms. I was so cold and so sleepy for that 2-hour shift of guard Duty I just wanted to get back in my tent and cover up with the only one wool blanket that I had and try to get warm and go back to sleep.During one of the nights there was a big thunderstorm that came through and we put the tent up right and stay mostly dry. The female trainees were able to take their Field Jackets and the drill sergeants had a big tent with a fire burner for a heater inside. So the male trainees got the worst of the deal. No heat no Field Jackets and no sleeping bags. Why are Russia and United States always at each other's throats. Russia is an enormous and powerful nation with so many beautiful intelligent people. I wish Russia and the United States were friends.

I think making that video must have cost you physically and mentally. In my younger years I led a team did a lot of weekend orienteering with groups of young men and teenagers. At first it was physically very hard, but it became easier after a while as our fitness levels increased. I admire you for taking the experience so bravely.

@Юлия Никитина Haha well I have forgotten most of it because this was 2011-12 and I had no one to practice with after they left. I remember one phrase I don’t know Cyrillic alphabet but I will spell phonetically in English: “Yob dviyu madje” is how would spell it. They told me it was a somewhat old fashioned insult saying “go fuck your mother”. They said people in some countries like Georgia still took it seriously. Idk how true that is. But most other stuff they taught me was how to say nasty things to a lady or to hit on them 😄 I wish I still remembered!

Well done, Eli. I'm impressed. There's an interesting book 'The Unwomanly Face of War', by Svetlana Alexievich, about the experiences of female Russian soldiers in World War II/Great Patriotic War. Well worth a read, especially the testimonies about the (unpleasant) way they were treated after the war by women who hadn't served. Maybe you've read it?

I have a very different view of Russia and other former USSR republics since I started watching Youtube content about what they are really like. Eli from Russia is one of my favorites. She is so down to earth and well spoken. Easy on the eyes, too. Our media here in the US still treats Russia as if Stalin is still running a police state, and Putin is the personification of evil. The whole media sham that Trump colluded with Putin to defeat Hillary Clinton (which she created and promoted) was embarrassing. It's unfortunate. We are a lot more alike in so many human ways than we are different. We need to let bygones be bygones and become friends and even allies in the name of the common good.

Imo females or males BOTH can have physical limitations and they should decide for themselves what kind of career and lifestyles they want and what they can sustain. I wouldn't want to generalize whether a certain gender should be or shouldn't be in a particular type of profession, though statistically they do have large gap. US marine for e.g has about 9% women etc. Still that only means its a choice. Could be due to society's perception. For e.g STEM workforce still lack behind men, to some extent due to different take from "society". imo society needs to develop more unbiased, holistic view.

But at the same time I hear from my wife and her mom on how their generation was constantly told by their "female" school teachers etc that girls are bad at math. Now THAT I do not agree with and I would say is a cultural thing in US. I don't know about other countries. Also I don't know if it is more pronounced all across US. I used to date some girls when I was younger and each of those girls said same thing that starting at 18, they keep getting asked if they have a boyfriend yet? THAT is also a cultural thing. Hence I just wanted to sort of point to a "possibility" of culture contributing to womens choices.

it's just that women are different. they are more naturally oriented to arts, socializing, music, caring, etc, and not so much towards maths. It's not due to society. Even in countries like Norway which tried to encourage women to go into STEM, they didn't manage to, and most programmers are still males. Like it or not, men and women are biologically different. As for war, obviously the physical strength and reflexes required are MUCH more male-oriented. We can try to be politically correct, but it doesn't change facts. Even if they could, most women wouldn't join the army (which is why they don't.) They just like safety too much. A few years ago Australia for a year only allowed women to join the military. Well guess what? they're still the minority.

In England we have the Royal Marine commando as well as the SAS/SBS., short for Special air service(known simply as the regiment) or Special boat Squadron(Royal Navy)

We have the Commandos and the SASR in Australia, which are our equivalent to the Spetsnaz. The Selection process for either one is tough but I believe the SASR is harder to get into. I always wanted to join the SASR as a kid.

The fun of field craft, I got paid for it. Women are useful in special operations, they can do it, look at the Soviet snipers in the Great Patriotic War, many were women. We have several special services, SAS, SBS and various others, I would guess that every country has them.

There were many woman who fought in combat for the red army during WWII. Many were trained as snipers, as woman were believed to be more patient than men. The most famous was Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko who was credited with 309 enemy kills. So, clearly woman can fill the role if given the chance and trained properly.

My thoughts on the Russian spetznas? I think they are super-soldiers. A very effective and dangerous unit. These elite soldiers are good at many things. But at the end of the day, they are a group that has learned how to kill effectively, to move fast, to achieve the most difficult tasks

Girls in the military? Why not... I imagine that Russian women are tough, just like Russians are in general. Should a girl be spetznas? I don't think so. But there are many different special units in the Russian military. Perhaps girls could be in some of the other units

Hi. As a serving South African military officer this has to be one of my all time favorite videos that you have made. The similarities that all militaries share is always amazing and even though we are 15 000 miles apart on different continents, your experience is common to all soldiers. Even your meal box, in the South African Army we call it a Ratpack (Ration Pack) is similar but also different as our terrain is much hotter and more open savannah (no forest) and our meals show this difference. I loved the uniforms you were wearing. Are they yours or did they give it to you? In SA Army our uniform can only be worn by soldiers, it is an controlled item and its against the law for civilians to own or wear it. In SA Army we have the Reconnaissance Regiments (Recce's for short) who are our Special Forces and are a lot like the British SAS. We have lots of girls in the SA Army... our constitution allows anybody to apply for any position, so girls serve in all aspects of the military including in the combat arms. I am a tanker and have served with many woman over my 30 year career.... but no girl has (SO FAR) survive the CYCLE... this is what the Recces call their 12 month initial training phase cause its tough as nails.... but maybe someday a girl will get it done. I think it is more about the physical part. From what I understood, all countries have some kind of physical test that the "students" need to pass in order to pass the exam. For most special forces, it is very difficult for men to pass, let alone women.

Hi from Aotearoa New Zealand.. Spetsnaz are tough and trained to live and adapt to all conditions, simply no pushover, well disciplined and notably respectful of religion and peoples culture. My nation has SAS specialist training similar to Spetsnaz and is richly combined with the native culture of my Maori people. This is seen in our combined Haka "war dance" and unity rarely seen among specialized units. Much respect and thanks for sharing your experience.

Eli - a very, very interesting program - We here (in the West) don't see this - I've never seen such a film of the Spetsnaze . By the Way, it's a Rifle not a Machinegun, you carried, looked like an AK74 to me. And, yes in my country, we have two special forces - one Army oriented, and one Naval oriented.

Cool video. Don't want to comment on how Spetsnaz would fare against the SEALs, SAS or Sayeret Matkal. It's hard to make such comparisons. One thing is for sure Russia is one of the few countries that have effectively deployed female snipers in combat.

While doing 8 months of compulsory military service, i had seen exercises of military compound hit teams' with at least 20 commandoes arrival at most in 3 minutes from their resting places to the Middle of military compound nearby us. Crows always fly over turkish military compounds and garbage eating at least 20 dogs had been seen while waiting at midnights and early mornings. Public buses, transport ships are all free of charge with military clothes in Turkey. No girls or women had wanted with us , military doing citizens to make love or talk, chat, laugh, cuddle , embrace etc in Turkey.

Women should also be trained to defend their country. It seems clear to me that not everyone is suitable for every task, many men also do not make it as spetnatz or other elite troops.
But in both Russia and Europe we have seen how valuable the contribution of women is in the defense of their country. Plenty of examples of this from the second world war.

As a pacifist l have very mixed feelings about such a presentation. However, it is easy to set them aside because it must be the case that the Russian military has many non-Slavic ethnicities in service to the homeland, including mid to high echelon ranking officers. If that is indeed true, how can apartment owners be permitted to discriminate against non Slavic Russians when renting out flats to applicants? For that matter, many distinguished Tatars have reached the height of Sov and Russian politics, arts and culture. RudolphNureyev was Tatar as l recall. Okay, so he defected. But so did other famed dancers: both Mikhail Baryshnikov and Boris G_ were both Russian.

I cannot remember the date of the video that highlighted your search for a new apartment but my viewing of it was recent. It may be you found another, better flat by now (l hope so) but it still irritates me that non Slavs can be denied equality in any dimension of Russian civil society. There is something else too that is, well, not bothersome, but in reality inconsequential in one sense regarding your ethnicity. Quite simply, to me you speak Russian, were born there and thus have Russian nationality, you are educated not just with Russian culture in mind, but raised in the traditions of your own Tatar culture as well. Those are things that not only enrich you personally but also Russia as a nation state as well. Everything about you engenders awe in me, anyway. 💗💗💗
