Underground
Sleep Parade Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to see you
But I cannot bring myself to
I want to see you
But I cannot bring myself to

I want to see you
Want to hear you
But naturally I cannot

Want to see you
Want to hear you
It's best to keep it underground
Underground

They want to see you
But they cannot bring themselves to
They want to see you
But they cannot bring themselves to

It's so worrying, this feeling
Tears my stomach into shreds
To meet it, to forget it
It's best to just leave this underground
Underground

Every turn and step I take
And every thought and choice I make
By oh so much, I owe so much to you

I moved the problem far away

But realise now the problem's here to stay
I miss you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sleep Parade's "Underground" are about a aching desire to see and hear someone but being unable to do so for some reason, leading the singer to feel torn and anxious. They express their longing multiple times, always adding the caveat that they cannot bring themselves to act on it. Instead, they view it as best to keep their feelings underground, hidden and unacknowledged. The second half of the song reveals that others share these same feelings towards the person in question, adding to the singer's turmoil.

The repetition of the opening lines "I want to see you/ But I cannot bring myself to" underscores the internal conflict and indecisiveness of the singer. They are torn between wanting to give in to their desire and keeping it hidden. The song describes this feeling as worrying and even physically painful, with the emotion tearing at their stomach "into shreds". Despite the pain, the singer decides it's best to keep everything underground, indicating a fear of acting on their feelings or revealing them to others.

The final lines in the song suggest that the person the singer is longing for may not be present in their life anymore. The lyrics "I moved the problem far away/ But realize now the problem's here to stay/ I miss you" indicate that the singer may have tried to distance themselves from the person they yearn for but it has not worked, and their longing remains.
