1. Sleeper was a Britpop group which formed in 1993 in Manchester, England. The band consisted of Louise Wener (vocals, guitar), Jon Stewart (guitar), Diid Osman (bass) and Andy Maclure (drums). The band released three albums - Smart, The It Girl and Pleased to Meet You - and split in 1998.
Their breakthrough song, Inbetweener, featured a memorable video with Dale Winton, who was a popular icon among students at the time. Sleeper also recorded a cover version of the Blondie song Atomic, which was used as a track in the film Trainspotting. Their version was quite well-received and the only criticism is that it was too similar to the original.
The It Girl was arguably their finest moment with Lie Detector, Sale of the Century and Statuesque as the defining tracks. It was produced by Stephen Street then famous for his contributions to The Smiths, Morrissey and Blur. It captured the imagination of the Britpop era. Wener admits that they were basically hanging onto the coattails of the bigger bands including the likes of Blur and Oasis.
The original band name for the band was Surrender Dorothy. They took that name from the smoke trail telling Dorothy to surrender in the Wizard of Oz movie.
After the band's split Louise Wener went on to have a successful career as a novelist.
The band was the inspiration for the phrase "Sleeperbloke", referring to the disparity between the glamorous singer Wener and the other frequently ignored members of the band (who tended to be far more anonymous and stood at the back). The term is still used by music press journalists and musicians, to refer to any person of limited standing within a band or an especially drab and unremarkable individual. Sleeper were said to be amused by the term and even produced an ironic "Sleeperbloke" T-shirt which sold well
The real-life Sleeperblokes were:
Jon Stewart (born Jonathan David Stewart, 12 September 1967 in Sheffield) β (guitarist)
Diid Osman (b. Kenadiid Osman, 10 April 1968 in Woking) β (bassist)
Andy McClure (b. 4 July 1970 in Liverpool) β (drummer)

3. "Sleeper is a auteur of claustrophobic, sample-based hip-hop production. His work, both as an accomplished musician, and as a respected tattoo and visual artist balances a breadth of spirit with worldly, emotional depth. Finding influence and community in the worlds of classic hip-hop and artistic, experimental rock, Sleeper fills his tracks with sound, leaving an MC with just enough room to create or with the luxury of saying more by saying less. His music is lo-fi with purpose: grainy sounds are used to lend atmosphere to larger, modern electronic sound collages, grimy drums sound out familiar hip-hop patterns beneath thick layers of sound. Sleeper is a craftsman in the truest sense of the word."
4. Sleeper is a raucous punk trio from Oklahoma, formed in the latter half of 2008. They have released a single tape to date, on their own Excitable Boy tape label.
5. Sleeper were a 90s emo/post hardcore band from Staten Island, New York. After a few releases as Sleeper, they were forced to change their name because of the existence of the UK group Sleeper, with the same name. They then changed their name to Serpico.
What Do I Do Now?
Sleeper Lyrics

Riding her perfume downstairs.
Make-up like glue, she danced 'round the room,
To the sound of the corduroy flares.
Let's go to town, taxis all round,
We could stop for a couple of beers.
He looks at it all, stifles a yawn,
She tries not to look like she cares.
What do I do now?
Are we going under?
What did I do wrong?
I thought we had it sorted
Out the other day
Maybe I'm just stupid
Can't we try again?
No-one told me it was raining.
Can't face a club,
They walk to a nearby pub,
Watch a couple of bands.
Draining the glass, they walk home at last,
Reaching for each other's hands.
Nothing is said, he goes to bed
Dreaming of her on his own.
She stays up all week, watching him sleep,
Scared that she'll wake up alone.
What do I do now?
Are we going under?
What did I do wrong?
I thought we had it sorted
Out the other day
Maybe I'm just stupid
Can't we try again?
No-one told me it was raining.
I'll miss you every day of your life
And oh, you'll feel it too,
You're not that strong,
You know I'm onto you.
I'll miss you every day of your life
And maybe when you're dead, I'll get some rest,
From holding onto you.
What do I do now?
Are we going under?
What did I do wrong?
I thought we had it sorted
Is there someone else?
Or am I too familiar?
Was it when I said I wanted to have children?
Tore up all your photos,
Didn't feel too clever,
Spent the whole of Sunday
Sticking you together.
Now I'd like to call you,
But I feel too awkward.
Some things need explaining,
No-one told me it was raining.
The lyrics to Sleeper's "What Do I Do Now" tell the story of a failing relationship from the perspective of the woman involved. The song opens with the woman dressing up and trying to impress her partner, who seems uninterested. They go out for a night on the town, but the tension between them is palpable, and she wonders what she did wrong to make things so awkward. The chorus, "What do I do now?" is an expression of her confusion and desperation to save the relationship.
As the night wears on, they end up at a nearby pub, where they watch some bands play. They don't talk much, but they hold hands on the walk home. The woman stays up all week, worrying about the state of her relationship and whether her partner will leave her. The second chorus repeats her earlier questions, but this time with added emotions.
The final verse is the most emotional, with the woman admitting that she will miss her partner terribly if they break up. She wonders if there is someone else, or if she is too familiar to her partner. She regrets tearing up his photos and spending the whole of Sunday sticking them back together. She wishes she could call him but feels too awkward, and no one told her it was raining, which symbolizes the way life can be unpredictable, and things can change suddenly.
Overall, the song captures the pain and confusion that can come from a failing relationship, as well as the desire to try and make things work even when love seems to be slipping away.

Dear God, that time, that voice, that face, that tune...spiraling into my mid-thirties, I look back on this and remember what a delight it was to be 19 and part of the London Scene between 94 and 97. There will never be anything to compare.

Still a classic after the first time I heard this song in 1996.
