Near its inception, Sleeping At Last's amateur debut album, Capture, was noticed by Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who helped expose the music to the major-label world. Soon after, the band signed to Interscope Records and released 2003's Ghosts , their first official full-length album. Two independently-released full-length records followed: 2006's Keep No Score and 2009's Storyboards . In between the writing and recording of albums, the band has established a reputation for a pitch-perfect live show, successfully headlining several U.S. tours and sharing the stage with such artists as Switchfoot, Yellowcard, Something Corporate, Billy Corgan's Zwan, Alanis Morrisette, Lifehouse, and Phantom Planet, just to name a few. The creative process has always been protected, as the band self-produced each record, working with respected mixers such as John Goodmanson and Alan Moulder.
After the departure of drummer Chad O'Neal in 2011, the remaining duo embarked on the ambitious Yearbook project, in which O'Neal and Perdue released three songs on the first of every month in individual EPs. After its completion, all EPs were compiled into an LP and published independently. However, upon the final release of the Yearbook series, Perdue stepped down from the duo, leaving Ryan O'Neal a solo artist under the group's pre-existing moniker.
On December 10, 2012, O'Neal announced his largest project to date: the Atlas series, a three-part project approaching the themes of the origins of the universe and human development. Similar to 2011's Yearbook compilation, each set of new songs would be released as individual EPs until each part's completion, at which time the compilation of songs would be released as an LP. Up to now, 2014's Atlas I and 2019's Atlas II remain as stellar examples of O'Neal's accomplishments as a solo independent artist. Production on Atlas III is in progress, and its first two songs, "Overture III" and "Awake" have been released as singles.
Besides the Atlas series, O'Neal has kept busy with other projects, including three albums of covers commissioned by ABC's "Grey's Anatomy", in which Sleeping At Last has appeared a whopping 77 times. Sleeping At Last also produced the scores for the documentaries Many Beautiful Things (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) and charity:water's The Spring (Original Score). Finally, O'Neal has released multiple singles surrounding significant astronomical events, published as a compilation in 2020 under the title of Astronomy, Vol. 1.
Sleeping At Last has long been a beacon shining brightly on behalf of independent artists. In the ever-changing climate of the music industry, the quest for a successful independent career seems evermore difficult to attain. From his new home in L.A., O'Neal pursues this challenge relentlessly through his commitment to musical integrity in his songwriting, and in this way nurtures a unique and personal relationship with his listeners. He has remained true to the things that brought him to music in the first place: his love of melody and the power of words. His music and lyrics emerge from a place that is honest, raw, and spiritual: Says Ryan, "Our faith is a big part of who we are, but we have always intended our music to be for anyone that cares to listen, no matter who they are or what they believe in. Everyone hears a song in a different light."
In keeping with this, Ryan's lyrics ask every important question that occurs. While he promises no fast, sure answers, he somehow always offers hope as the consistent, overarching theme.

Sleeping at Last Lyrics

Along the dotted line
We left our date of birth
And our history behind
We were full of life
We could barely hold it in
Strangers to suffering
We made our families proud
But scared at the same time
We promised we′d be safe
Another lie from the front lines
Our backs against the wall
We're surrounded and afraid
Our lives now in the hands
Of the soldiers taking aim
Our questions ricochet
Like broken satellites
How our bodies, born to heal
Become so prone to die?
Though time is ruthless
It showed us kindness in the end
(By slowing down enough)
(A second chance to make amends)
As life replayed, we heard a voice proclaim
"Lay your weapons down
They′re calling off the war
On account of losing track
Of what we're fighting for"
So we found our way back home
Let our cuts and bruises heal
While a brand-new war began
One that no one else could feel
Our nights have grown so long
Now we beg for sound advice
"Let the brokenness be felt
'Til you reach the other side
There is goodness in the heart
Of every broken man
Who comes right up to the edge
Of losing everything he has"
(Losing everything he has)
(Losing everything he has)
We were young enough to sign
Along the dotted line
(To build a better life)
(To build a better life)
Now we′re young enough to try
To build a better life
To build a better life
The lyrics of "Mars" by Sleeping at Last depict the experiences and emotions of soldiers during war. The opening lines, "We laid our names to rest, along the dotted line" signify the soldiers willingly sacrificing their identities and individuality when they enlist. They leave behind their personal histories and birthdays, emphasizing how they become part of a larger collective in the military.
The song delves into the conflicting feelings of pride and fear that soldiers and their families experience. The line "We made our families proud but scared at the same time" reflects the mixed emotions loved ones have when their family members go off to war. While the soldiers promise to be safe, they know it is a lie, and the line "Another lie from the front lines" exposes the harsh realities of war.
The lyrics also express the vulnerability and fragility of human life. The metaphor of "broken satellites" conveys the destruction caused by war and how fragile our bodies are despite being born with the ability to heal. The song suggests that time, though ruthless, can offer moments of kindness by slowing down and providing a second chance to make amends.
Towards the end of the song, there is a shift in perspective. The focus turns to the aftermath of war and the long-lasting effects on soldiers. The lyrics encourage embracing the brokenness and allowing oneself to feel the pain and vulnerability. However, there is also a glimpse of hope, as the song acknowledges the goodness that can be found within every broken person.
Line by Line Meaning
We laid our names to rest
We let go of our identities and expectations
Along the dotted line
By conforming to societal norms and expectations
We left our date of birth
We left behind our origins and beginnings
And our history behind
As well as our past experiences and mistakes
We were full of life
We were vibrant and overflowing with vitality
We could barely hold it in
Our energy and enthusiasm were almost too much to contain
We were amateurs at war
We had little understanding of the harsh realities of conflict
Strangers to suffering
We were unfamiliar with the pain and hardships of life
We made our families proud
We brought honor and pride to our loved ones
But scared at the same time
Yet, deep down, we were afraid and uncertain
We promised we'd be safe
We assured ourselves and others of our protection
Another lie from the front lines
Only to realize it was another falsehood in the face of danger
Our backs against the wall
We felt trapped and cornered
We're surrounded and afraid
Fear engulfed us as we found ourselves encircled
Our lives now in the hands
The outcome of our existence rested upon
Of the soldiers taking aim
The decisions and actions of those with power
Our questions ricochet
Our doubts and inquiries bounce back
Like broken satellites
Like malfunctioning spacecrafts lost in space
How our bodies, born to heal
It's puzzling how our physical forms, meant to mend
Become so prone to die?
Have become so susceptible to death?
Though time is ruthless
Even though time can be merciless
It showed us kindness in the end
Ultimately, time revealed compassion and mercy to us
(By slowing down enough)
(By allowing us to pause and reflect)
(A second chance to make amends)
(An opportunity to rectify our mistakes)
As life replayed, we heard a voice proclaim
As our lives unfolded again, we heard a voice declare
"Lay your weapons down
"Abandon your instruments of conflict
They're calling off the war
For the battle is now being halted
On account of losing track
Due to the loss of understanding and purpose
Of what we're fighting for"
Of the true cause and meaning behind our fight"
So we found our way back home
Thus, we rediscovered our path back to where we belong
Let our cuts and bruises heal
Allowing our physical and emotional wounds to recover
While a brand-new war began
However, a fresh battle commenced
One that no one else could feel
A conflict that only we could truly comprehend
Our nights have grown so long
The darkness and hardships have extended into our nights
Now we beg for sound advice
Now we earnestly seek guidance and wisdom
"Let the brokenness be felt
"Allow your shattered state to be experienced
'Til you reach the other side
Until you emerge transformed on the opposite end
There is goodness in the heart
Within the core of every shattered individual lies goodness
Of every broken man
Of every person burdened with brokenness and pain
Who comes right up to the edge
Who stands at the precipice
Of losing everything he has"
On the verge of losing all they hold dear"
(Losing everything he has)
(Risking the loss of everything)
(Losing everything he has)
(Sacrificing all that they possess)
We were young enough to sign
We were naive and inexperienced enough to agree
Along the dotted line
To conform and adhere to societal expectations
(To build a better life)
(In pursuit of creating a more fulfilling existence)
(To build a better life)
(To construct a life that is more satisfactory)
Now we're young enough to try
Now, with a renewed perspective, we are still young and capable enough to attempt
To build a better life
To strive for a more rewarding and purposeful existence
To build a better life
To establish a foundation for a life of greater significance

This is the lyrics translated in Latin back to English
MAY NOT BE ACCURATE
We put our names to rest
In the line.
We left our day of birth
On the back of our history.
But we were not full of life,
Barely able to keep.
We we went to war
Strangers no more suffering to gather.
Family, we
But at the same time scared.
We promised we would not be saved
Some of the camp of the lie.
And our backs against the wall
We're surrounded by, and fear.
In our hands
TAKING AIM of the guard.
Our questions ricochet
As the guards broken;
To our bodies are born healthy;
So it is prone to die?
However, time is ruthless,
Lenient end points
By slowing down enough
From the second chance to make amends.
Replayed life, as we have heard a voice announce:
"And now, please take weapons down!
They were descended'll call it off war
Due to the loss Spirit
They that were men of war. "
So we find ourselves back in the home;
Do not try our heal our wounds.
While the war was on the new,
For by one another no one is able to sense things.
More nights are grown.
However, the plan to hand.
'I might be done for grief
While reach the other side.
There is no goodness in my heart
every broken
Who is right up to the edge
The losing everything you have. "
We were young enough signal
In the line.
We have enough youth
To do so might find a better resurrection.
To do so might find a better resurrection.

I'm leaving everything
to hurt everything
because once I was an innocent kid
so pure
so filled with life
but now I'm a raging teenager
who doesn't understand anger
and what it means to lose
everything
