Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band rapidly rose to fame following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, made the band more popular. After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses, before going on another hiatus and returning in 2008 with its fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. After another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album, .5: The Gray Chapter, in 2014. Their sixth studio album, We Are Not Your Kind, was released on August 9, 2019. Their seventh studio album, The End, So Far, was released on September 30, 2022. The band has released two live albums titled 9.0: Live and Day of the Gusano: Live in Mexico, a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell, and five live DVDs. The band has sold 30 million records worldwide.

I'm counting all the killers
They sway as they swarm
A look of gluttons in their eyes
They mutter as the body loses warmth
They pick your bones like locks inside a tomb
And take great care to not take care of you
Here's an unexplainable one
While I was learning to live
we all were living a lie
I guess you got what you wanted
So I will settle for a slaughterhouse soaked in blood and betrayal
It's always somebody else
somebody else was me
You want the real smile?
Or the one I used to practice not to feel like a failure?
I don't need you to do it for me
I don't need you to understand
I don't need you to hide it from me
I just want to feel like any other man
I won't show you the whole story
I won't show you the aftermath
I won't show you my allegory
Don't look away
Here's an unexplainable one
Here's an unexplainable one
Here's an unexplainable one
I'm not ahead of my time
I just drew the first breath
If I'm alive tomorrow
I will alleviate the pressure
by cutting you out of me
I found my bottom line
dead on the front lines
I know I'll never go home
So set fire to your ships and past regrets and be free
I don't need you to do it for me
I don't need you to understand
I don't need you to hide it from me
I just want to feel like any other man
I won't show you my whole story
I won't show you the aftermath
I won't show you my allegory
Don't look away
Here's an unexplainable one
What have you done?
What have you done?
Yeah
While I was learning to live
You taught me how to die
I guess I got what I wanted
Another needle in the back through purified scarification
It wasn't somebody else
You fucking did it to me
You want a real smile?
I haven't smiled in years
The lyrics to Slipknot's song Solway Firth are a reflection of the personal struggles and emotional turmoil of lead singer, Corey Taylor. The song begins with him standing on a hilltop, overlooking a group of people who he refers to as "killers." These individuals have an insatiable hunger and desire for power and control, and they will stop at nothing to satisfy their cravings. Taylor describes the scene in graphic detail, with the killers picking at bones as if they were unlocking a tomb.
The following lines are perhaps the most enigmatic in the song, with Taylor describing an "unexplainable one." It is unclear exactly what he is referring to, but it could be interpreted as a metaphor for the internal battle he is facing. He goes on to reflect on his past, acknowledging that he and those around him were living a lie. He feels betrayed and abandoned, but refuses to let his pain be seen by others.
Throughout the song, Taylor asserts his independence and self-reliance, stating that he does not need anyone else to do anything for him, nor does he need them to understand or hide anything from him. He yearns to feel like a normal person, but is haunted by his own allegory and the aftermath of his personal struggles. The song ends with Taylor confronting his own inner demons and questioning what he has truly achieved in his life.

Today, up on this hill
At this moment, while situated atop a hill
I'm counting all the killers
I'm mentally registering all the murderers nearby
They sway as they swarm
Their movements are flowing and coordinated
A look of gluttons in their eyes
Their eyes portray an insatiable desire for something
They mutter as the body loses warmth
They whisper incoherently as the corpse becomes colder
They pick your bones like locks inside a tomb
They remove your flesh from your bones as if opening a lock in a tomb
And take great care to not take care of you
They're intentionally avoiding caring for you or your well-being
Here's an unexplainable one
Here comes something inexplicable
While I was learning to live
As I was discovering how to exist
we all were living a lie
All of us were living deceitfully
I guess you got what you wanted
I assume you obtained your desired outcome
So I will settle for a slaughterhouse soaked in blood and betrayal
Thus, I'll accept a place of immense violence and deceitfulness
It's always somebody else
There's always another individual to blame
somebody else was me
That someone else was actually myself
You want the real smile?
