Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band rapidly rose to fame following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, made the band more popular. After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses, before going on another hiatus and returning in 2008 with its fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. After another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album, .5: The Gray Chapter, in 2014. Their sixth studio album, We Are Not Your Kind, was released on August 9, 2019. Their seventh studio album, The End, So Far, was released on September 30, 2022. The band has released two live albums titled 9.0: Live and Day of the Gusano: Live in Mexico, a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell, and five live DVDs. The band has sold 30 million records worldwide.

The Dying Song
Slipknot Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Let your mouth go sick and dry
Put your life into your death now
Let them sing until you die
Die, die, die, yeah
Radical rather than rhetorical
Babble like an oracle
Father and the son and the holy ghost
Communist comatose
Show me all the wagers are a bet
The middle of a nuclear winter
Is a modern achievement of the retro apocalyptic horde
Satan? You must be mistaken
There are no more Satans
Only the bosses on the board
Forget, deny, ignore, nice try, it's you
Regret, rely, remorse inside of you
Yeah
Maybe you've been down too long
Maybe you've been down too long
The heart begins to suffer
When the soul has given up
And the flesh is barely more than bone
When no one else is listening
Only when you've had enough
Time to sing this dying song alone
Put your hands into the water
Let your mouth go sick and dry
Put your life into your death now
Let them sing until you die
Die, die, die, yeah
Maybe you've been down too long
Maybe you've been down too long
Think hard, you bastards
You're gonna tell me why
If I don't get an answer
You're gonna sing and die
Think hard, you bastards
You're gonna tell me why
If I don't get an answer
You're gonna sing and die
The heart begins to suffer
When the soul has given up
And the flesh is barely more than bone
When no one else is listening
Only when you've had enough
Time to sing this dying song alone
Put your hands into the water
Let your mouth go sick and dry
Put your life into your death now
Let them sing until you die
Put your hands into the water
Let your mouth go sick and dry
Put your life into your death now
Let them sing until you die
"The Dying Song" by Slipknot is a powerful and intense song that explores themes of despair, suffering, and questioning the meaning of life. The lyrics depict a sense of hopelessness and isolation, urging the listener to confront their own mortality and face their inner demons.
The opening lines, "Put your hands into the water, Let your mouth go sick and dry" symbolize a sense of drowning and suffocation, both physically and emotionally. This could represent the feeling of being overwhelmed by one's own struggles and feeling powerless to change or escape from them. The repetition of the line "Let them sing until you die" suggests a sense of resignation, as if the person is waiting for the end to come.
As the song progresses, the lyrics delve into deeper existential questions. The lines "The heart begins to suffer, When the soul has given up" convey a state of emotional and spiritual exhaustion. The reference to the flesh being "barely more than bone" further reinforces the idea of a body that has lost its vitality and become a mere vessel for pain and suffering. The lyricist seems to be pleading for answers, demanding explanations for the hardships endured, and questioning the existence of higher powers or forces that may control or influence their fate.
The overall tone of the song is one of anger and frustration, with the repeated calls for answers from the "bastards" who are believed to hold the key to understanding. It's a song that captures the raw emotions of desperation and the desire to make sense of one's suffering, even if it means confronting death head-on.
