Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band rapidly rose to fame following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, made the band more popular. After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses, before going on another hiatus and returning in 2008 with its fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. After another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album, .5: The Gray Chapter, in 2014. Their sixth studio album, We Are Not Your Kind, was released on August 9, 2019. Their seventh studio album, The End, So Far, was released on September 30, 2022. The band has released two live albums titled 9.0: Live and Day of the Gusano: Live in Mexico, a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell, and five live DVDs. The band has sold 30 million records worldwide.

Five, four, three, two, one, zero
Yeah
I'm a popstar threat and I'm not dead yet
Got a super dread bet with an angel drug head
Like a dead beat winner, I wanna be a sinner
An idolized bang for the industry killer
Throw a suicide party and I'm guaranteed to fucking snap
It's evil sonic, it's pornoholic
Breakdowns, obscenities its all I want to be
If you're 555, then I'm 666
If you're 555, I'm 666
But if you're 555, I'm 666
What's it like to be a heretic?
If you're 555, I'm 666
What's it like to be a heretic?
Everybody's so infatuated
Everybody's so completely sure of what we are
Everybody defamates from miles away
But face to face they haven't got a thing to say
I bleed for this and I bleed for you
Still you look at my face like I'm somebody new
Toy, nobody wants anything I've got
Which is fine because you're made of everything I'm not
If you're 555, then I'm 666
If you're 555, I'm 666
Well if you're 555, I'm 666
What's it like to be a heretic?
If you're 555, I'm 666
What's it like to be a heretic? Yeah
Heretic, yeah
Thirty seconds, sixteen, eight, four, lemme tell you why
I haven't the slightest, I'm teaching your brightest
They're listening, clamoring
All the money in the world can't buy me
Go ahead, lie to me
Tell me again how you're tortured
I want to know how you fallowed your orders so well
You're full of shit
You had a dream, but this ain't it
If you're 555, I'm 666
If you're 555, I'm 666
If you're 555, I'm 666
If you're 555, I'm 666
If you're 555, then I'm 666
What's it like to be a heretic?
If you're 555, then I'm 666
What's it like to be a heretic?
If you're 555, I'm 666
What's it like to be a heretic?
If you're 555, then I'm 666
What's it like to be a heretic?
Heretic, yeah
The lyrics of Slipknot's song "The Heretic Anthem" are intense and filled with anger and rebellion against society's expectations and norms. The song speaks of a desire to be a sinner, an industry killer, and to have an identity that is different from what society expects. The lead singer refers to himself as a "popstar threat," someone who is still alive and not dead, despite the expectations of society. He is obsessed with breaking down and being obscene, all in the pursuit of being the industry's ideal.
The song also speaks of the divide between those who follow societal norms and those who stand out as "heretics." The singer taunts those who are infatuated with the industry's expectations, stating that they defame from miles away but do not have the courage to face him. He feels a disconnect from society and its values while being made of everything that society is not.
The chorus repeatedly asserts that if "you're 555, then I'm 666," which can be interpreted as a way of stating that if you conform to society's expectations, then he is the opposite--the heretic. The song ends with the same questions, "What's it like to be a heretic?"
