I think saying 'rice ball' would have been perfectly understandable. The concept of a ball of rice is straightforward enough... At least, it would have been less likely to blow our young, American minds (XD) than the dissonance formed when a kid sees something that is obviously *not* a donut being called a donut and can't understand why, lol.

actually im living in japan right now and i eat one every day for breakfast, and sometimes buy one for an afternoon snack. also in japan its a common hobby to go mountain climbing/hiking (among the elderly actually), and everyone eats rice balls. it's an essential traveler's food here, which is what pokemon trainers are.. haha
