What started as two friends popping into each other’s houses and then home studios, putting down an idea here and a melody there, developed into a set of songs with a Christmas theme, then a theoretical album, then a real album with a release date and a title. ‘Funny Looking Angels’ includes original songs from both Tom and Andy but also features a selection of covers. The eclectic choice includes Yazoo’s ‘Only You’, Black’s ‘Wonderful Life’ and a closing track which features guest vocal from rising star Agnes Obel, in a duet with Tom singing a sumptuous version of ‘The Christmas Song’.
The friendship continued, and in promotion for their next album 'Only Smith & Burrows is Good Enough', Tom Smith said “I never thought this second album would not happen. I don’t think we could stop it from happening. It has its own force, which is the power of our collaborative writing and voices. Although it did take a while.”
'Only Smith & Burrows is Good Enough' was released by PIAS on 19 February 2021 - with ten carefully crafted songs from the long term collaboration including recently released singles, 'All The Best Moves' (with it's video of spilt screen, socially isolated, dancing at home from each singer), 'Old TV Shows', 'Parliament Hill' and 'I Want You Back In My Life'.
The album was recorded over six weeks in Tennessee with producer Jacquire King during 2020. Commenting on the process, Andy Burrows said "“Neither of us are precious about who sings what. It’s always what’s best for the song. And Jacquire understood that – but he also pushed the idea of the songs, vocally, being Smith and Burrows. So it’s a really lovely equal vocal distribution.”

Too Late
Smith & Burrows Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You can't make promises that you're gonna keep goin' on (not like this)
But you assure me, only one more time, only one last time
But that's what you told me last week
One more time of this is gonna drive me crazy
One more time of this is gonna break us apart
One more time of this is gonna break my heart
(Why did you have to do this to me?)
It's never too late
The lyrics of Smith & Burrows's song "Too Late" is about a failing relationship. The singer of the song is struggling to hold onto his significant other, who has been breaking promises as a result of being "half-gone". The singer is pleading with his partner to stick to their word and promises, which they continue to break repeatedly, causing the singer heartbreak and anguish. Despite the broken promises, the partner continues to assure the singer that it will be the last time they will stray, but the singer has already heard the same promises before. The singer is helpless and feels like the relationship is beyond repair.
The lyrics convey a sense of desperation and hopelessness, as the singer can sense that the relationship is falling apart with every broken promise. The repetition of "one more time" highlights the cyclical nature of the partner's broken promises and provides a sense of tension that builds up throughout the song. The line "it's too late, you say, it's never too late" suggests that the partner is aware of their mistakes but keeps making the same errors. The song ends with a somber feeling, suggesting that the relationship is beyond repair and the singer is left to deal with the aftermath of the failed relationship.
