Utterly Simple
Smoke Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything really is stupidly simple
And yet all around is utter confusion
Fairy tales written may help you to see it
Do you understand about Lewis's Alice?
We fit all our lives into regular patterns
All that we really know is that we're really living

(spoken:
The man that seeks the world, his wisdom seeks to know his mind
And knowing where his feet should walk, and when he should or should not
talk And have a friend to find
Don't look around to find the sound that's right beneath your feet
The hermit sits inside his cave and seeks to know his mind
Staring into empty space and seeing things in people's faces others cannot find
Don't look around to find the sound that's right beneath your feet)

We've nothing to hide so why try to hide it?
I know there are some but they're screwed up inside

If you need a reason for all this I'm singing
It's simpleness really that gives it its meaning

Overall Meaning

In "Utterly Simple," Smoke delves into the concept that everything is really simple, despite the overwhelming confusion and chaos of our daily lives. The first verse establishes this idea, with the lyrics "Everything really is stupidly simple / And yet all around is utter confusion." The second verse offers a potential solution to our inability to see this simplicity - through fairy tales and stories like Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The chorus continues the theme of simplicity, noting that we all live our lives in patterns.

The spoken interlude provides further guidance on how to navigate through life's complexities. The man seeking wisdom should focus on knowing his own mind, when to speak and when to stay silent, and finding trustworthy friends. Similarly, the hermit who seeks enlightenment should not look outward but inward, staring into empty space to find the answers they seek.

The ending of the song highlights the idea that we sometimes make things more complicated than they need to be, but ultimately, it's the simpleness of life that gives it meaning.

"Utterly Simple" is a cover of a track off of Traffic's debut album. The original was based on an Indian drone, complete with sitars and tamboura etc. It here gets a pop reworking, which actually works pretty well
