All I Want Is You
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's my favorite time of year
And all I want for Christmas
Nothing else will do
All I want for Christmas is you
Jingle bells, boughs of holly
And all I want for Christmas
Nothing else will do
All I want for Christmas is you
All I want for Christmas is you
The lyrics to Smokey Robinson and The Miracles' song "All I Want Is You" capture the joy and excitement of the Christmas season. The opening lines express the ubiquity of the holiday, stating that "Everywhere, 'tis the season." This sets the stage for the singer's enthusiasm, as they declare that it is their favorite time of year.
The chorus reveals the true desire of the singer's heart: "All I want for Christmas is you." Here, the lyrics convey a profound longing for a specific person, suggesting that material possessions or other gifts are of little importance. The repetition of this line emphasizes the simplicity and sincerity of the sentiment, affirming that nothing else will suffice.
The second verse brings forth imagery associated with Christmas, such as "jingle bells" and "boughs of holly." These elements contribute to the festive atmosphere described in the lyrics, creating a joyful backdrop for the singer's declaration. The mention of "people full of cheer" further emphasizes the spirit of happiness and celebration that accompanies the holiday season.
In summary, "All I Want Is You" by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles is a Christmas song that highlights the special significance of a loved one during the festive season. It expresses a heartfelt desire for a specific person's presence, demonstrating that their companionship is the ultimate gift sought after.

@williamg2552 Yes, that is correct. It was licensed to Chess records but didn't do well enough in the Detroit area to be distributed nationally. This was before Barry Gordy, Jr. (founder and owner of Tamla & Motown Records) borrowed money from his parents so that he could distribute his own records nationally. It seems that Chess and or their distributors weren't exactly fair to Gordy when it came to paying out royalties! (A common practice by most distributors at the time.)
