Smokey was obviously a writer and arranger of beautiful music but his lyrics were underrated. This is one of his greatest poetic turns in a song. "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage" is one of the few tracks that comes close to the metaphor-laden mastery of this one. Smokey could tell a story eloquently in words too.

One month earlier on December 25th, 1965 it entered Billboard's Hot Hop 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #11 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #2 on Billboard's Hot R&B Songs chart... Saw them do this live at the Regal Theater. I have the record still. I think Sweet Darling Dear is the flip side. They really got down then. Poor little Smokey was cute but kinda of slew foot and he never pretended to really dance but they were one of the sharpest groups around. Oh my, I was so young. I'd better get to bed now. But I enjoyed this.

Smokey Robinson was the best song writer, at Mowtown Records in their
early 60's! This song played by the DJ's at the Hollywood Roller Skating Rink!
You had to skate backwards couples only! That was a challenge for me to keep up on
the wooden floor! That was back in the mid-sixties! This was my favorite of all hits!

Good Question,Jamey !!! THE MIRACLES SHOULD have been inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME 23 years ago. But they only put Smokey in , and left the rest of the group out , while inducting all of the other Motown groups INTACT. Yet, they inducted one hit wonder PERCY SLEDGE, RONETTES, (only 8 hits,) BLONDIE, and other "questionable choices" . All of THE MIRACLES deserve induction...NOT JUST ONE !!

Burt was a great song writer, and I loved many of the songs he wrote for Dionne Warwick, however William Smokey Robinson is the best of the best. I don't say that for the sake of argument or debate; it's just my personal opinion. Smokey was the KING of love songs. Can you remember this, "It would be easier to take the wet from water, all the dry from sand, than for anyone to try to separate us, stop us from holding hands, cause I love you, or I've got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it's cold outside I've got the month of May. True love can't get much deeper than that!

The Miracles were NEVER just a "one man show". Smokey knew this, that's why he pushed so hard for their induction after the Hall of Fame snubbed them in 1987... something that should have NEVER happened. ALL of them were songwriters, and 3 of them were Producers. Miracle Pete Moore did all of the vocal harmony arrangements, not Smokey. Miracle MARV TARPLIN was voted by Mojo Magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of ALL TIME ...Smokey or no Smokey. Miracle BOBBY ROGERS was the group's original choreographer. PETE MOORE was a prolific songwriter-producer in his own right. Without RONNIE WHITE, there would never have been a STEVIE WONDER. CLAUDETTE added a crucial female sound to all of their records .The Miracles were there with Gordy BEFORE the formation of Motown Records...and he said "Without the MIRACLES (not just Smokey, ALL of them) , the Motown Record Corporation would NOT have been possible". If he said it....believe it. He was THERE.

The memories I have of being a teenager in Los Angeles in the 1960's are unforgettable!!! I will cherish them as lo long as I live. I went to Gompers, Markham, Locke when it first opened its doors. The Soulettes featuring Bob Marley's future wife, Rita, made this song first, I think. It's called, A Deh Pon Dem. I like it better, though it's more crudely produced.
