For The Love Of A Stranger
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm in the mood for love
Simply because you're near me.
Funny, but when you're near me
I'm in the mood for love.

Heaven is in your eyes
Bright as the stars we're under
Oh! Is it any wonder
I'm in the mood for love?

Why stop to think of whether
This little dream might fade?
We've put our hearts together
Now we are one, I'm not afraid!

If there's a cloud above
If it should rain we'll let it

But for tonight, forget it!
I'm in the mood for love

Overall Meaning

Smokey Robinson's song "I'm In The Mood For Love" is about being in love and how being near the person you love can change your mood instantly. The first verse of the song states, "I'm in the mood for love, simply because you're near me. Funny, but when you're near me, I'm in the mood for love." This suggests that the presence of his loved one impacts the way he feels, and it makes him want to be in love.

The second verse suggests that the person that the singer loves is perfect in every way. Heaven is in their eyes, and they are described as being as bright as the stars they are under. It's clear that the singer is deeply enamored with this person. The chorus is a repetition of the first verse, emphasizing the fact that the mere presence of this person makes the singer feel in love.

The third verse suggests that the singer has no doubt about their love, and they don't want to overthink their relationship. They've already put their hearts together, and they are one. The final verse acknowledges that there may be obstacles in their relationship, such as a cloud above or rain. However, the singer is not worried about those things and chooses to focus on the present. This song expresses a strong connection with someone, and that connection puts the singer in the mood for love whenever he is near them.

As a 14 year old back in 67, this was my favorite song by Smokey. Sweet days of youth!

I was 12. Even after all these years, when I hear this song, I flash back to sunset on a warm summer night in late August riding around Belle Isle in Detroit with my grandparents. It was the "Summer of Love" but there had been horrible riots. Although not everything was terrible in Motown back then.

Smokey wrote this song after his wife Claudette had suffered a couple of miscarriages, and she was feeling guilty for having "let him down." He wanted to reassure her that she hadn't let him down, there was nothing to feel guilty about, and his love for her was lasting and real. This one came from the heart.

I loved this song before I met my wife. She died in 1991. We had been married less than three and a half years. We lost 2 baby's to miscarriage and this song is going to go with me to my grave.
