Love Machine ~Part 1~
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I won't work for nobody but you (yeah baby)
I'm just a love machine
A huggin', kissin' fiend
I think it's high time you knew
Whenever I think of you
My mind blows a fuse (baby)
My meter starts to rise, I become so confused
My voltage regulator cools
When I'm sitting next to you
Electricity starts to flow
And my indicator starts to glow, wooh
I-I I'm just a love machine
And I won't work for nobody but you baby
I'm just a love machine (yeah baby)
A huggin', kissin' fiend
I-I I'm just a love machine
And I won't work for nobody but you
I'm just a love machine (yeah baby)
A huggin', kissin' fiend
I'm gentle as a lamb,
I'm not that hard to program,
There's no way that you can lose
My chassis fits like a glove
I've got a button for love
That she's got to use
If you look into my files
I am sure you can find out how
To turn me on just set my dial
And let me love you for a little while, wooh
I-I I'm just a love machine
And I won't work for nobody (but you baby)
I'm just a love machine (yeah baby)
A huggin', kissin' fiend
I'm just a love machine
And I won't work for nobody but you(baby)
I'm just a love machine (yeah baby)
A huggin', kissin' fiend
I'm just a love machine
I won't operate for nobody but you
I'm just a love machine (yeah baby)
A huggin', kissin' fiend
The lyrics to Smokey Robinson and The Miraclesβ βLove Machine - Part 1β depict the singer as a robot or a βlove machine,β whose sole purpose is to love and serve their partner. The singer declares that they wonβt work for anyone else and they are programmed to be a βhugginβ, kissingβ fiend.β The singer also hints that when they think of their partner, their mind βblows a fuseβ and when theyβre near their partner, their βvoltage regulator coolsβ and βelectricity starts to flow.β
The singer personifies themselves as an actual machine and uses technical jargon to describe their love for their partner. They claim to have a βbutton for loveβ that their partner needs to βuseβ and that thereβs no way their partner can lose, implying that their love is fool-proof and guaranteed. The singer also hints that they have an ability to turn on, as if they're a machine, if their partner knows how to βset (their) dial.β Overall, the lyrics describe an intense and all-consuming love that is likened to a machine, which can be seen as either endearing or unsettling.

Man, I remember this tune so well in the spring of 1976. I was a silly freshman in high school, loved this kind of music and had my whole future ahead of me.

Is it weird that I remember this song but it sounded rather different? Same main singer, but the backing vocals are much more gruff sounding, there was seemingly less reverb and it was in a slightly different key? Maybe I'm just imagining things. That or another Mandela effect.
