Save Me )
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now I’ve cried a river, since the day you said goodbye
Mhmm, and if you don't come back, I'm going to drown in the tears I cry, mhmm

Save me (save me)
Save me (save me)
Come on and save me (ooh save me)
I need you so
Like falling off a mountain slope, I'm sinking down so fast (down so fast)
Clinging to a twig of hope, that this separation won't last

Save me, (save me, save me)
Why don't you save me? (save me, save me)
It’s up to you to save me baby (save me)
I need you so
Ooh, yeah, yeah

Hmm, without you here beside me, I'm only half alive
Hmm, stay away from me any longer and I can't survive, oh ho

Oh, save me (save me, save me)
Why don’t you save me (save me, save me)
Only you can save me baby (oh save me)
I need you so
I’m asking you to save me (save me)
I need you so
Only you can save me, yeah (save me)

I need you so
Oh, save me, save me, save me

The repetition of the plea "save me" throughout the song underlines the urgency of his need for her return to save him from emotional devastation.

The singer of the song is clearly in a state of emotional turmoil, and his life feels incomplete without his lover by his side. Smokey can sing happy birthday and it's a HIT AND A CLASSIC. EVERY SONG BY HIM IS MY FAVORITE SONG

willcat

It’s not a Smokey song. It’s a Miracles song.
People really need to STOP giving SMOKEY SOLE CREDIT for songs recorded by The MIRACLES as a GROUP.
It is unfair, and inaccurate: I don’t see you doing this to the other major Motown groups . You never call The Four Tops’ songs “Levi Songs” or The Supremes’ songs “Diana Songs”. So don’t do it to Motown’s First Group. Stop kicking Bobby, Ronnie, Claudette, Pete, and Marv UNDER THE BUS!!

Claudette added a great element to the Miracles harmonies.

As a preschooler I had serious beef with Claudette, for making Smokey sad. I was in love with Smokey Robinson before I entered Frederick Douglass Elementary School in Inkster, Michigan, in 1961. #stillLove💚 🌹💚🌹

Motown had soooo many great "B" sides but this is one of my favorites, always played this on the Juke Box back in the day. With lines like "Like falling off a mountain slope, I am sinking down so fast. Clinging to a twig of hope, that this separation won't last." It's no wonder that Bob Dylan called this man 'Americas Greatest Living Poet' at the time. With Smokey's smooth style and great use of words todays artist can only listen in awe.

Like I said, ultimate asassin!

Love this song! I haven't heard this in years. Thanks for posting it.

This B side is better than 99% of what passes for music today.
