A Fool Such As I
Snow Hank Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Now and then there's a fool such as I)

Pardon me, if I'm sentimental
When we say goodbye
Don't be angry with me should I cry
When you're gone, yet I'll dream
A little dream as years go by
Now and then there's a fool such as I

Now and then there's a fool such as I am over you
You taught me how to love and now
You say that we are through
I'm a fool, but I'll love you dear
Until the day I die
Now and then there's a fool such as I

Now and then there's a fool such as I am over you
You taught me how to love
And now you say that we are through
I'm a fool, but I'll love you dear
Until the day I die
Now and then there's a fool such as I

Now and then there's a fool such as I
Now and then there's a fool such as I

Overall Meaning

In "A Fool Such As I," Snow Hank sings about the pain of saying goodbye to someone you love. He asks for forgiveness for being sentimental and emotional, saying he may cry when they part ways. Even though they will be separated, he will continue to dream of her. He then admits that he is a fool for still loving her even though she has moved on. He confesses that she taught him how to love, and he will always love her, even if it means he will be a fool forever.

The lyrics convey the pain and vulnerability that come with loving someone who doesn't love you back. The song talks about the difficulty of letting go of someone who has played an important role in your life, and how a person may still long for someone even when it's clear that they are no longer an option. The simple melody and Snow Hank's emotive vocals add to the poignancy of the lyrics, making it a timeless classic.

One of the greatest country songs ever written sung by one of country's greatest voices -- Hank Snow, the Singing Ranger.

This is a song my late father sang to me when I was a young boy.  I thought it nerdy and lame at the time....as he passed, I found this in his record collection.  I played it, the memories came flooding back,  and I cried.I was a fool for not realizing how he taught me how to love and become a good man...The album was neither nerdy nor lame...I was.I miss you Dad.

It hits us all Mark, growing up maturing, sure makes it come back to us how our Papas and Mothers did for us, miss mine greatly, funny but not funny how we lived our lives surrounded by those we loved so dearly, not preparing for the day without them, but GOD has a plan, and HE is never wrong, GOD bless

I always think of my dad when I hear this song. He used to love to sing and this was one of his favourites, a Nova Scotia boy like Hank. And yes, tears come to my eyes when I hear this song too. My dad was a tormented man, an angel and a terror, a wartime vet before they invented the term PTSD, a lost soul until he finally found the love of his life in his later yeats. I loved him but, as a child, I did not really understand his demons.

Thomas Dupee

So many (mostly) men were scarred by PTSD. Before that term was used, soldiers were said to be "shell shocked". Another term was "battle fatigue".
