The band were founded at the University of Dundee in 1994 by Lightbody, Mark McClelland, and Michael Morrison of Shrug. After briefly using the name Polarbear, releasing the EP Starfighter Pilot (1997) and losing Morrison as a member, the band became Snow Patrol in 1997 and added Quinn to its lineup. Their first two studio albums, Songs for Polarbears (1998) and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up (2001), released by the independent record label Jeepster Records, were commercially unsuccessful. The band then signed to the major record label Polydor Records in 2002.
Connolly joined Snow Patrol in 2002, and after their major-label debut album, Final Straw, the following year, with "Run", the album's biggest hit, the band rose to national fame. The album was certified 5x platinum in the UK. Their next studio album, Eyes Open (2006), and its hit single, "Chasing Cars"—reported in 2019 to be the most-played song of the 21st century on UK radio—propelled the band to greater international fame. The album topped the UK Albums Chart and was the best-selling British album of the year. In 2008, Snow Patrol released their fifth studio album, A Hundred Million Suns; then, in 2009, they released their first compilation album, Up to Now; and, in 2011, their sixth studio album, Fallen Empires, was published. The band released their seventh album, Wildness, on 25 May 2018.
During the course of their career, Snow Patrol have won seven Meteor Ireland Music Awards and been nominated for six Brit Awards and one Grammy. Final Straw, Eyes Open, and A Hundred Million Suns have sold ten million copies worldwide, combined.

I'll Never Let Go
Snow Patrol Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Was the day that you'd always planned to leave anyway
And the vast empire you come through to get here
Makes the world look like pennies in my hand
I'll never let go, I'll never let go you said out loud
I'll never let go, I'll never let go you shouted out
I was lost somewhere cold and it looked haunted
I was asking strangers but no one understood me
I was drenched in sweat when your words came to me
I'll never let go, I'll never let go you said out loud
I'll never let go, I'll never let go you shouted out
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
It was the last highway you would ever travel
The long road from a daughter, wife and son
When the bus stopped a beat from California
Your tired feet they ached over the road
I'll never let go, I'll never let go you said out loud
I'll never let go, I'll never let go you shouted out
I'll never let go, I'll never let go you said out loud
I'll never let go, I'll never let go you shouted out
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
In "I'll Never Let Go," Snow Patrol describes a life-changing event from the perspective of the singer. The song touches on themes of loss and moving on, with the suggestion that sometimes we need something extreme to force us into the changes we need.
The first verse tells us that a house burning down was merely a coincidence, as the person living there had been planning to leave anyway. This suggests that they may have been unhappy in their living situation or needed a fresh start. The second half of the verse is more abstract, describing whatever journey the person has taken to reach this point as being vast and making the world seem small in comparison.
The chorus is a repeated assertion that the singer will never let go, as someone has apparently said to them in the past. The words have significance to the singer and shake them out of a daydream where they are lost and asking strangers for help. The repetition and force of the words "I'll never let go" suggest that the singer is trying to convince themselves that they won't let go of whatever it is they're holding onto.
The last verse describes a long road trip, suggesting that the person who said "I'll never let go" is on this journey with the singer, although it's not clear if they are together physically or only in spirit. The journey is long and tiring, but the person's words give the singer the strength they need to carry on.
Overall, "I'll Never Let Go" is a song about finding strength in the face of change, and the importance of having support from someone else.

I always look for songs that can give me chills. It's rare that I find them. It's even more rare that I get chills in the first few seconds of a song. I'm glad I found this one.
