The band were founded at the University of Dundee in 1994 by Lightbody, Mark McClelland, and Michael Morrison of Shrug. After briefly using the name Polarbear, releasing the EP Starfighter Pilot (1997) and losing Morrison as a member, the band became Snow Patrol in 1997 and added Quinn to its lineup. Their first two studio albums, Songs for Polarbears (1998) and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up (2001), released by the independent record label Jeepster Records, were commercially unsuccessful. The band then signed to the major record label Polydor Records in 2002.
Connolly joined Snow Patrol in 2002, and after their major-label debut album, Final Straw, the following year, with "Run", the album's biggest hit, the band rose to national fame. The album was certified 5x platinum in the UK. Their next studio album, Eyes Open (2006), and its hit single, "Chasing Cars"—reported in 2019 to be the most-played song of the 21st century on UK radio—propelled the band to greater international fame. The album topped the UK Albums Chart and was the best-selling British album of the year. In 2008, Snow Patrol released their fifth studio album, A Hundred Million Suns; then, in 2009, they released their first compilation album, Up to Now; and, in 2011, their sixth studio album, Fallen Empires, was published. The band released their seventh album, Wildness, on 25 May 2018.
During the course of their career, Snow Patrol have won seven Meteor Ireland Music Awards and been nominated for six Brit Awards and one Grammy. Final Straw, Eyes Open, and A Hundred Million Suns have sold ten million copies worldwide, combined.

Snow Patrol Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
For the lies I've told
That the truth it no longer thrills me
And why can't we laugh?
When it's all we have
Have we put these childish things away?
Have we lost the magic that we once had?
In the end, in the end
There's nothing more to life than love, is there?
In the end, in the end
It's time for us to lose our weary minds
Will you dance with me?
Like we used to dance
And remember how to move together
You are the torch
And it all makes sense
I've waited here for you forever
I've waited here for you forever
In the end, in the end
There's nothing more to life than love, is there?
In the end, in the end
It's time for us to lose our weary minds
We're lost 'til we learn how to ask
We're lost 'til we learn how to ask
We are lost 'til we learn how to ask
So please, please just ask
In the end, in the end
There's nothing more to life than love, is there?
In the end, in the end
It's time for us to lose our weary minds
There's nothing more to life than love, is there?
The lyrics of Snow Patrol's "In the End" explore the idea of losing sight of the important things in life, specifically love and connection. The opening verse acknowledges the consequences of dishonesty: "It's the price I guess/For the lies I've told/That the truth it no longer thrills me." The singer seems to have lost appreciation for the truth, perhaps because it would require facing the damage caused by past lies.
The second verse asks an important question: "And why can't we laugh?/When it's all we have." Laughter and joy are simple pleasures, and yet they are often taken for granted or dismissed as childish. The singer wonders if adulthood and the struggles of life have caused them to forget the magic they once had. The chorus reinforces the idea that love is the foundation of a fulfilling life: "There's nothing more to life than love, is there?" The repetition of this line emphasizes the singer's belief that all other pursuits, successes, and failures pale in comparison to the importance of love.
The final verse offers hope that love can be rediscovered if we are willing to make the effort: "Will you dance with me?/Like we used to dance/And remember how to move together." It suggests that the singer's partner is the key to rediscovering the magic they have lost. The repeated phrase "I've waited here for you forever" suggests a longing for connection that has never faded. The song ends on a plea for communication and vulnerability, a recognition that we are lost until we learn to ask for what we need.

And remember how to move together
Let's remember how to be in sync with each other
You are the torch
You are the light that guides me
And it all makes sense
Everything falls into place
I've waited here for you forever
I've been longing for you for what seems like an eternity
We're lost 'til we learn how to ask
We're unable to find the right direction until we start to seek answers
So please, please just ask
So, I beg you, ask me questions, start a conversation with me
