The album was recorded in Trondheim at the famous Westside Studios, produced by Thomas Ekle and Jan, and at Brygga Studios, produced by Ulf Risnes, between August 1998 and February 1999. Sodapop contained 13 happy dance pop tracks. Most of the songs were written by Geir, Frank and Anne J herself. After its release, it went straight to #3 on the album charts in Norway, and stayed there for quite some time. In Norway the sales went platinum.
"Handsome" was the first single slated for release stateside. Already a smash hit in their home country of Norway and creating a buzz in the US, the single had high hopes for Soda. The song and its remixes promised to open the world's eyes to Soda and their club friendly grooves. Soda had planned to release a self-titled American debut in April 2001 featuring songs that had already been amazingly popular in Scandinavia.
In July 2000 Soda released their second album "Popcorn". It stayed 12 weeks in the sales charts, reaching #11 as best position. I pretend I'm not around.
But she sees on her screen I am [?],
So here I am, here I am.
She don't call me one and only,
No, she just calls me when she gets lonely.
Something I do that gets her there,
To feel better, and get well.
There's no love without this pain,
There's no one time without again.
And there's no way that I am what she needs now.
I'm just a passing glance,
Not a for sure, not a chance.
And there's no way that I am what she sees now.
She calls me when I'm in town,
I pretend I'm not around.
But she sees on her screen I am [?],
So here I am, here I am.
She don't call me one and only,
She just calls me when she gets lonely.
Something I do that gets her there,
To feel better and get well.
Backwards down we're back again,
Sideways just to find our friends.
Oh this road is changing everything I know now.
Upside down inside my head,
Let's just talk about something else.
The sun gets brighter and takes me alone.
She calls me when I'm in town,
I pretend I'm not around.
But she sees on her screen I am [?],
So here I am, here I am.
She don't call me one and only,
No she just calls me when she gets lonely.
Something I do that gets her there,
To feel better and get well well well.
And get well
And get well
Yeah
No this curtain's never closed,
There's only one way that this goes.
Turn in circles and we lose our places.
New faces around but no replacements I've found,
Can we just find a way to go back home now?
She calls me when I'm in town,
I pretend I'm not around.
But she sees on her screen I am [?],
So here I am, here I am.
She don't call me one and only,
No she just calls me when she gets lonely.
Something I do that gets her there,
To feel better and get well.
Don't call me one and only,
Just call me when you get lonely.
Something that gets her there,
To feel better and get well
Well, don't call me one and only,
Just call me when you get lonely.
Something that gets her there,
To feel better and get well.
The lyrics of Soda's song "Here I Am" revolve around a complicated and somewhat toxic relationship between two individuals. The singer receives calls from his lover when she is lonely, but he tries to keep his distance, pretending to not be around. Despite his efforts, she can see that he's available, and he shows up, acknowledging that his actions are aimed at helping her feel better and improve her mental health. However, it is clear that there is no love in their relationship and he is not what she needs, nor does he see a future with her.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of confusion and unease, as the singer tries to make sense of his place in the relationship. He acknowledges that the road they are on is changing everything he knows, and though they turn in circles, they never seem to find their way back home. The curtain is never closed, and there are new faces around, but they offer no replacements for what they once had. The song ends with the repeated line "don't call me one and only, just call me when you get lonely. Something that gets her there, to feel better and get well," emphasizing the temporary and transactional nature of their relationship.
In summary, "Here I Am" is a song about a relationship that lacks love and commitment, but is driven by the singer's desire to help his lover feel better when she is lonely. The song is characterized by a sense of confusion and a lack of direction, as the two individuals struggle to find their place in each other's lives.
