Chasing Cars
Sofi Tukker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We'll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

If I lay here

If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sofi Tukker's "Chasing Cars" evoke a sense of simplicity, intimacy, and escapism. The opening lines, "We'll do it all, Everything, On our own," suggest a desire for self-sufficiency and independence, while also hinting at a shared experience or journey. The repetition of "We don't need, Anything, Or anyone" reinforces this idea of self-reliance and the power of being together with someone special.

The chorus, "If I lay here, If I just lay here, Would you lie with me and just forget the world?" speaks to a longing for connection and intimacy, a desire to escape from the pressures and constraints of the outside world. It's a plea for a moment of solace and togetherness, where the two individuals can simply be present with each other and let go of everything else.

The imagery of a garden bursting into life symbolizes renewal and growth, a contrast to the mundanity and routine of everyday life. It represents a desire for something vibrant and alive, a metaphor for the beauty and vitality that can blossom in a relationship when nurtured and cherished.

The verses that follow continue to explore themes of love, vulnerability, and the fear of change. The lines "Let's waste time, Chasing cars, Around our heads" suggest a whimsical pursuit of the fleeting moments and simple pleasures in life, highlighting the importance of being present and enjoying the beauty of the moment. The song ultimately conveys a sense of yearning for connection, understanding, and the timeless simplicity of love that transcends the noise and chaos of the world.

Chasing Cars is a song we both bonded over. It depicts that state of being intimate with someone, of forgetting the whole world exists, when you're together. The lyrics couldn't be more perfect. The two opening notes are iconic. We still can't believe we even dared to touch it... it's such a masterpiece already. We hope it pulls at the heartstrings of people who once listened to this song the way we did, and maybe it'll introduce some people to the song altogether, in which case... you're welcome ; ) We feel lucky to have been able to have fun with it. Thank you Snow Patrol for writing one of our favorite songs ever. And thank you Triple J for featuring our Chasing Cars performance on Like A Version!! 💜
