Dive
Soft Cavalry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Water's deep
It's not safe
To dive

Water's deep
It's not safe
To dive
The fishing lines
Get all untangled
Pelicans that pass by the coast
Silently glide by
Without a care

Water's clear
No one's askin' why

Water's clear
No one's askin' why

Silver linings
And cloud formations
An act of God by the great tornado
Quietly away from us

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh

Revelations of rain and shadows
Mysteries of the great unknown
We head to the shore

Coral blue sweep
That line the oceans
Enchanted worlds hidden from the surface
If only we did take
The time to look

Water's deep
Dive

Water's deep
Dive
Dive

Dive
Dive

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Soft Cavalry's song "Dive" seem to be describing the dangers of diving into deep waters without being prepared, both physically and mentally. The repetition of the statement "Water's deep, it's not safe to dive" creates a haunting effect which warns the listener against taking risks without fully understanding the consequences. The fishing lines that become tangled and the pelicans that glide by without care give a sense of the tranquillity of the ocean, but also the unforgiving nature of it. The singer suggests that the water is clear, but no one is asking why, perhaps indicating that people are so focused on the beauty of the surface that they fail to see the dangers lurking beneath.

The lyrics then take a turn into spiritual territory, referencing "silver linings and cloud formations" as well as the "great tornado" as an "act of God". This shift in focus towards the spiritual could be interpreted as a call to recognise and respect the power of nature, both in terms of the physical and the spiritual. The "revelations of rain and shadows" and "mysteries of the great unknown" reinforce this, encouraging the listener to seek understanding rather than just seeking to enjoy the surface-level beauty of the ocean. Finally, the song ends with a final encouragement to "dive" into the deep waters, but with a sense that this should be done intentionally and with respect for the power of nature.

I saw them last night supporting Ride and they were excellent. Would strongly recommend seeing them live.

I still listen very much to "Waves are Universal". It's not a masterpiece, but it is a very sunny record and did a very special effort to catch up from the profundities of pain (emotional AND physical), when I have to deal with the darkest time of my life. So, I have a lot of love and kindness for this record. I love the artwork. A childhood friend of mine gave me as gift, as he knows of my love about everything related to Slowdive. So, it's very special.

For me, some of the most brilliant things made by Mojave 3 were those with the main vocals made by Rachel (first album is a fav, unfortunately an ex-boyfriend stole it from me. But it's ok, he has good taste 😉.)

I always have hoped for a new Rachel's work, but I know things became very hard for her, coz she had to deal with the pleasure and pain of being a mother of a very special child, living in the countryside. I suppose the situation is much more light now for her. It's a blessing to listen her music.
