Soft Kill clearly revere these inspirations, but their music - a style they’ve dubbed “Based Goth” - is its own animal, part of a lineage but unafraid to evolve into something new. October 2012 sees the release of the long awaited new single “Seven Hundred”, followed by the band’s second album in Spring 2013.
Savior
Soft Kill Lyrics

They discussed this round's wager
I fell into a trance
I started to fall
You were born with a name
Of a man who lived in danger
It wasn't part of the plan
And I know we're chained to something
I was leaning against the wall
You are my savior
We flow in peace like the ocean
Sucked down as we fall
To a place unknown
I pray to Gods I don't see
That you will lay in my arms
I can't wait longer
We flow in time with the ocean
The arms of the clock as they fall
To a place called home
The opening lines of Soft Kill’s ‘Savior’ is a narrative that describes the singer’s surrender to a sense of lulling hopelessness. As others discuss the game they're playing, the singer falls into a trance, and “starts to fall”. It could be interpreted as a reference to the way in which we become numb and detached from the world around us as the mind begins to unravel. The lyrics illustrate the notion of the human experience as a constant fall or descent, which can be both beautiful and terrifying.
The song’s chorus provides a haunting contrast to the verse. The line, “You are my savior,” amplifies the sense of comfort and redemption found in the seemingly inevitable fall. It speaks of being chained to something, implying that this downward spiral is apart of the cosmic order. The ocean metaphor in “We flow in peace like the ocean” reinforces that idea of going with the flow despite feeling powerless, and being “sucked down as we fall” is an acceptance of the inevitable. The final line where the singer prays to be with the beloved is a final acceptance that even in the midst of the fall, there is some hope of salvation even if it's the ultimate price of death.
