Exile
Soilwork Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please don't put it into words
'Cause I fear what you're thinking
...It's gonna make it hurt
You better not try to make me
Believe in someone new

[Chorus:]
Faithless
On my way
Defenceless
From my heart, won't you be
Heartless, here with me
Breathless, from this night's misery
This night will start the Exile... RUN!

Now you tell me what it was worth
Was it meant to be broken
The circle that wouldn't shed a single tear
And now you wanna redirect me from the face of the earth
Not willing to share your time
Not near
Not far
I'm just a spectator, once loved
Just fear
Just scars
A sheer introduction to what I've lost, to what I've lost...

[Chorus:]
Faithless
On my way
Defenceless
From my heart, won't you be
Heartless, here with me
Breathless, from this night's misery
(from this night's misery)
One more endless night...

To notice all the things I have to be...

[Solo]

[Chorus:]
Faithless
on my way
Won't forget...
From my heart, won't you be
Heartless, here with me

Breathless, from this night's misery
This night will start the exile... RUN!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Soilwork's song Exile narrate the emotional turmoil experienced by the vocalist after a failed relationship. The opening lines depict the fear of knowing what the other person may be thinking, and the pain that it may cause. The singer then pleads the other person not to make them believe in someone else, thereby showing vulnerability and admitting to being unable to cope with the despair. In the chorus, the singer expresses their sense of loneliness, feeling defenceless and faithless as they try to overcome their heartbreak. The repetition of the phrase "heartless, here with me" emphasizes the pain of being left alone, with the added helplessness of feeling breathless from their misery. The song's title "Exile" refers to the singer's feelings of being isolated and banished from their relationship.

The second verse portrays the bitterness of being left alone, searching for answers to the questions that torment them. The singer questions the worth of the relationship and wonders if it was always destined to fail. The phrase "circle that wouldn't shed a single tear" suggests that the relationship was one-sided, without any empathy towards the singer. The other person now wants to erase the singer from their life, leaving them as a "spectator," which highlights their inability to act or make a decision in the situation. The mention of "fear" and "scars" further emphasizes the emotional turmoil and trauma experienced by the singer.

Overall, the song Exile portrays an intense emotional upheaval, highlighting the singer's pain of being left alone and the helplessness of being unable to move on. The repetition of phrases adds a deeper sense of emotion to the lyrics, allowing the listener to understand the depth of the hurt that the singer feels.

I like her. She is rescuing amps. I like amps.

Old Soil never dies or fades. It just ages well, and progresses. I still like their older work though. This remains to be up there in my top favorite songs of theirs of all time.

Btw, this song is literally impossible to get 100%. If you hit 975/975 notes, it will still be 99%.

@canObeans4we

The song that introduced me to soilwork. Heard it on Reflex MX vs. ATV. I'm so happy that that amazing game made me find this amazing band.

@DracoxRPG

This is the album that introduced me to Soilwork. I listened to it and after a couple listens I put it away can't say I was a huge fan back then. Then about a month ago I was going through my mp3s, hit random to see what would play and I heard this song - 8 years later and I just picked up The Ride Majestic and it is by far one of my favorite albums. Now I'm picking up all the other albums as well. I would rank these guys in my top 5 Swedish/Metal bands of all time.
