I've loved this song since I remember anything about myself, even if it always brought upon a subtle sense of melancholy mixed with a would-be-love for the uncertain. I remember listening to this song for the first time back in 2011, when I was 19 and heartbroken. I believe every person can interpret art and lyrics depending on their own experiences. To me, a "soldier of fortune" is a person fighting for someone that won't ever be really theirs. So I was myself a "soldier of fortune", fighting and getting hurt for someone that wasn't ever mine, although I was his completely. I still get goosebumps every time I listen to it, even though I moved on and loved again and I will always will...
