1. Sole, born Tim Holland, is an alternative hip hop artist and a co-founder of the anticon. collective. Sole is known for his dense, often dark stream-of-consciousness writing style. His verses are often filled with abstraction, metaphor and sarcasm while avoiding or deconstructing traditional hip hop topics. His albums and record label have been featured in magazines such as Playboy and The Wire. Sole is also a producer and releases his self-produced experiments under the alias mansbestfriend, taken from the name of his Apple G4 computer
Sole was born in 1977 in Portland, Maine. He recorded his first demo in 1992. He shopped the demo to Entertainment Resources International. There was serious interest, and he was flown to Florida to record a few songs. However, the record deal fell through, and soon after, at age 15, sole got together a new group called "45 Below Records", which included Alias, JD Walker and a DJ Cuz the Highlander, now better known as Moodswing9, and together released an album titled "Mad Skillz and Unpaid Billz" under the moniker "Northern Exposure", selling more than 300 copies. At the age of 16, sole pressed up his first 12" and gave it away for free at the 1995 Gavin Convention. In 1996 sole started up a "Webzine" and online radio station, run directly from his basement bedroom in Portland, Maine. His Live Poets 12" from 1997 garnered some press and college radio play, selling a few thousand copies and leading to connections with other like-minded artists like Doseone (Adam Drucker), Jel (Jeffrey Logan), Atmosphere, The Shape Shifters, and the Sebutones (Sixtoo (Vaughn Robert Squire) and Buck 65 (Richard Terfry)). In early 1998, Sole and Pedestrian (James Brandon Best), coined the name Anticon, and together started the collectively owned record label of the same name. In the summer of 1998 Sole, Alias, and Doseone traveled to Minneapolis and together with Slug of Atmosphere recorded the first official Anticon album Deep Puddle Dynamics. Pedestrian and Sole eventually left for California, settling in the Bay Area. Anticon. is currently owned by eight members, Sole, Alias, Pedestrian, Jel, Doseone, Why? (Yoni Wolf), Baillie Parker, and Odd Nosdam (David Madson), well-known for his instrumental albums and his production work on Sole's albums.
Sole is married to Yasamin Holland. Her name and references to her can be heard scattered throughout his lyrics.

Jobs ain't nothing but free pens and long distance calls
Thought I had it all, the God got birth control
I've never paid parking ticket:
It's 20 dollars now or 300 then;
You want your money, come and get it
But better bring 200 guns and a 100 men
I've killed a million pens and thrown some stones, but never lost a bet
"Is my five minutes up yet?"
Got more time te relax now;
So I can say, "Fuck the industry."
Went for Rupert Murdoch's throat and left with Rawkus trying to sign me
You can't buy me
I'm holding my chips 'till I land on last base
I didn't burn any bridges;
I never needed none of 'em in the first place
'cause money made is money gone is money never had
Money here only pretends to care for the people we leave around
Always pack light 'cause the guns are packing suckers
All mad 'cause someone else paid' em
Shaking in their waste-your-life-away stance
'cause it's cool to be tragically hip:
Fools rule the Universe - it's O.K.
You say you want blood but drink piss all day
I say hang the queen from every streetlight on every Washington Street
Tell 'em it's difficult to have sex on waterbeds
'cause most of us can't afford waterbeds
And if we could, we'd move out the hipster settlement of Oakland
(The fine line between low icome and no income)
I can't read no lips 'cause I am stone
Always wanted to be a rapper
But when I finally made it there, no one wanted me
Since no one wants me here
In the immortal words of Ice-T:
"You should have killed me last year."
Bit in the mere mortal words of me
I've torn up some rebuttals and lost some friends
But like the old saying goes
"If you can't nuke 'em... starve 'em or drop food on 'em."
I'm half a novel, half a brothel, half a one-man army
MC's don't want beef, they wnna shake my hand
Then make a diss song about me
Idiots live to outdo their shortcoming
While my inner Napoleon is frying the biggest fish
I hold the gridge like a mic and a girl like a cross
People say I'm vague
But we know who's in vogue and when the revolution comes
All you'll know how to do is beg
The white man... is the fucking Devil
The white man is the baddest poet
The lyrics of Sole's song "Da Baddest Poet" are full of raw emotions, mixed with political and social commentary, creating an unconventional piece of music. The song opens with a strong statement that the police and jobs mean nothing to the artist, which sets the tone for his rejection of traditional societal norms. The mention of birth control adds a feminist perspective to the song, suggesting that women should have control over their own bodies.
Sole then goes on to talk about his disregard for authority, reflected in his refusal to pay a parking ticket. He challenges anyone who comes to collect the 300 dollars, stating that they should be prepared for a fight. Sole's defiance extends to his career in the music industry, where he suggests that he holds all the cards and won't be bought out by record labels. The line "money made is money gone is money never had" reflects his disillusionment with the capitalist system and the value placed on money in society.
The final part of the song is a commentary on racism and inequality, with Sole holding the white man responsible for all the problems in the world. He calls for a revolution where people will realize the true nature of the white man and stand up to him. Overall, the song is a powerful statement against conventional societal norms and a call for change.
