The Unseen
Solstice Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sucking the breath from my lungs
I fear, I dream
I convulse in pain the unseen
Not yet reborn
Still separated
Breathless I lay
Thought has left my mind
Death has been refined
Lungs have ceased to breath
Dead I'm forced to be
Tension and fear
Grips me through my punishment
I fall condemned
Forced into uncertainty
Memory fades
Life is sucked away
Torturing pain
Collapsed my chest remains
Down on my knees
I pray to be relieved
Choking on blood
Eyes rolled back I'm dead
The lyrics to Solstice's song The Unseen explore the concept of mortality and the fear of death. The opening lines describe the "ghost of god" as a force that is taking the breath from the singer's lungs, causing them to fear and convulse in pain. The next lines suggest a state of limbo or purgatory as the singer is "not yet reborn" and is still separated from life.
As the song progresses, the singer's thoughts begin to fade and they feel as though death has been "refined" and they are being forced to be dead. The tension and fear of punishment grip them and they feel uncertain about their fate. Whether this punishment is perceived as a result of religious or moral failings is open to interpretation, as is the meaning of the "ghost of god" in the opening lines.
The final lines of the song paint a vivid picture of the pain and suffering that the singer is experiencing, as they pray to be relieved and ultimately succumb to a gruesome death. The lyrics suggest a sense of resignation and acceptance of the inevitability of death, but with a haunting sense of uncertainty and fear for what may come after.
